Rachmaninov - "Rhapsody On A Theme By Paganini", Op. 43
I love this piece. The amazing thing about this section is that it is an intervalic inversion (flipped upside down in other words) of the Paganini theme. The original theme is A - C - B - A - E etc. and the inversion is A - F# - G - A - D etc. What is amazing is that it doesn't sound like the result of a contrapuntal trick. It sounds like a glorious, inspired melody.
Guitar Duel from Crossroads
Actually the ending piece that wins the duel is not Steve Vai's composition really, it's Paganini. The piece is ironic in some ways - Steve Vai represents Paganini and the classical school whilst Ralph represents Robert Johnson, yet Ralph wins by playing a Paganini piece that he must have learned in Juilliard.
Ralph does a great job at fake guitar playing in this movie, by the way. I wonder if he actually turned out to be a decent player after all the training he must have gone through.
14-year-old girl "shreds" classical guitar
From a technical aspect of playing - anyone that can play Paganini cleanly can "shred".
I grew up playing classical guitar, bass, violin and piano. Shred is actually a valid term here.
By far the most difficult "shred" piece by Paganini is his 5th Caprice. While not as beautiful as this one here, it's a 10 on the scale of difficulty... this one rates about a 8 to 9 on difficulty.
This girl plays this piece very beautifully. thanks for the post.
