"Get government out of healthcare" ... yea fuck tricare

Diver Goes For The Ride Of His Life

direpickle says...

From yt: "John Hoover, author, takes a ride on the wild side at Nakalele point on Maui. No Hoovers were harmed in the making of this video."

And then:
"We were nearing the end of the dive and were next to a fairly shallow pinnacle when a huge set of waves rolled overhead. John was too far inside next to the rocks to avoid the rush of water as the swell created a huge vacuum sucking him up and over the rocks. The resulting flow deposited him unharmed in a large 90ft deep basin slightly north of our position. Next time I saw him was on the boat some 10 minutes later. Thought he was a goner..."

Liquid mirror telescope

deathcow says...

We have to assume they have a motor and the mirror actually looks smooth at times. The video feed of objects passing overhead was very sharp.

No, and am I the only one surprised that someone is spinning it by hand? I would have thought to get any kind of useably flat surface you'd need a lot of control over the spin. If what we saw in the video is acceptable I'm pretty sure I could grind that out of glass in an afternoon with a dremmel...

Solar Roadways

RFlagg says...

I had more or less this idea like this 15 to 20 years ago, though I didn't add the solar panel aspect until about 10 years ago, and kinetic energy soon after the solar aspect. I wanted to make roads out of a strong plastic with lights for the edge lines. There would be quick swap panels to make it quick and easy to fix broken sections.

The issues I figured would be making them strong enough and cheap enough. Never carried the idea past my head. My main goal initially was to make edge lines easier to see at night in the rain, the idea went from lite up edges to why not make the whole road out of a plastic, and add groves to help water fall to sides better than conventional roadways. Then I eventually thought, why not make all that surface useful and make them capture solar as well, and eventually decided that since each panel is suspended on the base anyhow, why not capture the kinetic energy of the traffic pushing down on it and springing back up (was never sure if the limited motion that you could safely allow on a freeway would be enough to harness or not). I figured it would be too expensive and eventually decided the better solution would be to bury roads and make them all tunnels then turn the overhead areas (where the freeways are now) into green ways with solar roof collection areas as well, or just put roofs over the freeways and skip the green way effect... regular roads would still be the panel type... nice to see I was onto an idea anyhow.

Living Under Obama's Drones

chingalera says...

Tell ya what I don't wanna see:
Drones owned by local law enforcement municipalities, etc., flying overhead stateside en-masse. That's when I hand in my passport to an historically French colonial island nation and go volcano-climbing and diving for shellfish!

Tig Notaro on Conan talking about Breast Cancer

>> ^MilkmanDan:

That's cool and moving.
...One question: In the description / message from Louis CK I read "The show is on sale for the same 5 dollars I charge for my stuff. I'm only keeping 1. She gets the other 4."
Obviously I don't know the full story, but that strikes me as a bit off. Why not give all of it to Tig? Barring that, why not withhold any costs associated with hosting the files for download and/or manufacturing CDs or whatever and give Tig 100% of the rest? Or finally barring that, don't flat out say "1'm keeping $1 and she gets $4" -- at least weasel out of it with a generic "Tig gets most of the profits, and some will be donated to cancer research" or some such.
I guess what I'm saying is, I don't see Louis CK's involvement being worth 20% off the top. If she feels that it is worth it, that's cool -- but I'd prefer to be blissfully ignorant of it.

i think a dollar is perfectly reasonable. there is probably significant overhead in hosting a big file like that for (possibly) hundreds of thousands of people.

Samurai sword master shows how it's done

This looks ridiculous. When he "dodges" all he's doing is shifting his shoulders back while his head stays as stationary as a dead log. I guess it works if you're fighting someone dumb enough to consistently aim one foot to either side of the real target...

now imagine you were aiming for the head- giving his arms all the time to move... there is a reason why in pretty much in all sword and knife fighting schools (japanese and elsewhere) you are taught to aim for the body.
Also, a katana is usually used in semi-vertical slices since it wasn't specifically suited for stabbing (it'd get stuck).
Ofc this is a movie yadda yadda, but in a "real" fight the aim was to cut the shoulder/arms so you wouldnt hurt yourself charging in and could be ready for the next victim/attacker (that overhead stance is for fighting stuff on horses btw- forgot the name).

I never said that you should aim for the head specifically, but when you're making vertical slices, the head and the center of mass are inline.

The reason why swordmanship and marksmanship principles teach you to aim for the body is because it's the largest and easiest area to hit, and the center of mass is the hardest for the target to move in an attempt to dodge.

It makes no sense to aim for the shoulder, as it requires you to "charge in" just as much as if you were going for the center, but is much easier to miss. If you really wanted to disable someone, the wrists and forearms are a much better and less risky target, while the head, body, or throat are much higher reward targets. This is why hitting those areas will score you points in kendo, while the shoulder will not.

Basically, this fight makes no sense and looks retarded.

Indeed it us under the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971.
