I am only about 1 1/2 hr drive to the US border and have crossed over to do Black Friday shopping in the past, but over the past couple of years, Canadian retailers have started offering Black Friday deals as well (to keep Canadians in Canada I guess). It's not nearly as crazy as it is in the US though, it hasn't really caught on here yet. I didn't get out to the stores this year but I did buy some electronics online. Online shopping is the best - especially when shipping is free!

Bitter Pill - Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us Part 1

shatterdrose says...

I'm going with the wild assumption that you either didn't actually watch it, or you don't agree that a person has the ability to shop around for life saving care after being struck by someone else's car, knocked unconscious and taken to whatever the local hospital is.

Or you think a person who doesn't need emergency care can spend all their free time during normal working hours going from doctor to doctor and having exams which they have to pay for to find out which one can do their procedure the cheapest? Maybe we need an online shopping tool like Surgeria.com or CheapDoctors.com where we can just compare prices on open heart surgeries and then fly to a different state, pay hotels etc.

(And for the record, the idea of free-market life-saving care is about as ridiculous a concept as anything anyone can ever think of. The BASICS of capitalism is if you have a product or service that's in demand, has limited supply, you charge as much as you can. Which means, only the rich can afford quality health care. Because that's exactly what will happen, as per history.)

You take out the free market and this happens. Duh.

Get government and 3rd party payment out of the game and let capitalism do its thing.

Bank of America Adds Monthly Debit Card Fee

Sagemind says...

You have been brainwashed by their system. It is NOT a privilege to use their card, it is a requirement.

The banks have made it so that the card has replaced tangent legal tender. Many businesses don't even accept cash anymore. they have made us reliant on the bank to do everything. we can't even pay our bills any more without the bank. All local services have closed their doors to bill payments, we have been forced to pay through the banks. And you can't even access your account anymore, even at the teller, without your card.

The "Card" is not a privilege, it has been instituted into everything we do. Online shopping is part of that. Even my fourteen-your-old daughter has been forced to use a visa-debit card by the bank to force her into online shopping. Many products and services can now 'only' be bought using these online-debit cards. Things like video rentals, Theater and concert tickets and more. Many stores don't bring in their full selection anymore because they make it available on-line instead.

Trust me, get rid of your credit an debit card and you'll see how crippled you are without them.
I repeat, NOT a privilege,a REQUIREMENT.

>> ^Winstonfield_Pennypacker:

Banks will charge consumers directly for transaction fees now - or (as BoA is doing) they will charge a yearly fee for the priveledge of a debit card.

Obama moves forward with Internet ID plan

bmacs27 says...

I'm not sure you guys are being fair. My guess is that most of you are using your personal data in the way they describe. So instead of having a secure repository for it, you've sprinkled it all over the internet with online shopping, banking, or what have you. I mean, how many companies' websites do you think you've trusted with your credit-card number alone? Even if you haven't, it doesn't mean that most internet users don't.

I agree, a central repository like that would have to be extremely secure, as would the credentials they hand out. After things like the epsilon hack, it's hard to trust that is possible. However, the alternative doesn't exactly seem any more secure. Besides, the system is opt-in. Feel free to continue doing whatever you usually do and trust.

When all you need to worry about is the weakest link, I'd rather have fewer links. Also, as the video explains, this wouldn't necessarily be implemented by government alone. This will most likely be implemented by all those private companies that know how to do "hardcore IT."

Capitalist Holiday Brings Out Best In Humanity

honkeytonk73 says...

Yes. Thank God(tm) for the 'innernets' because without God(tm), online shopping wouldn't exist, and neither would we. I wonder why God(tm) didn't give Moses the 10 commandments on a USB drive or just a simple sheet of fucking paper instead of brittle stone tablets. Then Moses fucking wouldn't have broken it so easily when it threw them at the ground.

Oh. Don't boil a baby boat in it's mother's milk. God(tm) says that is bad and it just might warrant a stoning to death as punishment. Enjoy the holidays!

Money Stuff (Blog Entry by dag)

Deano says...

Do you do much in the way of affiliates? We might not be ad clickers (I just clicked an ad!) but I still buy stuff from various online shops. That's not going to stop. There are Videosift channels for books, geek, comedy, music and tv among others. I'm sure there are opportunities for both regulars and just-passing visitors to click on well targeted affiliate links to buy a DVD or something, particularly if you associate it with the content of a given video.

Then build up some aggregate stats to show other vistors e.g "what books Sifters have been buying in the Books channel" to give the links more context and weight.

The Great VideoSift Coming -Out Thread (Happy Talk Post)

Hi, you can call me Mint =) I was born in Finland but have been living in the USA for about 8 years now. I work in a coffee shop, and about half a dozen people per day ask me where I am from because of my accent (nobody can place it). Their guesses vary from Germany to England and Scotland(!?). I guess I can be flattered that some people think I come from an English speaking country. When I am tired, my English "goes away", at least my grammar does..

I have a husband and 2 German Shepherds. One is still a puppy, and totally crazy. Well, the older one is crazy too (see my avatar.. that's my older dog), but at least she knows how not to pee or poo in the house.

On my days off, when I am not cleaning up dogpoop, I am either surfing the web, watching TV, reading or shopping (even better, ONLINE shopping... ooah!). Oh, and playing World of Warcraft. I tend to get addicted to things, obviously right now Videosift is my #1 vice.
