My Sharona - The Knack

silvercord says...

"My Sharona" is a 1979 rock song sung by Doug Fieger, which was the debut single by and international hit for The Knack. Written by Doug Fieger and Berton Averre, it was produced by Mike Chapman and released June 18, 1979. The single went gold in eight weeks and, on August 25 it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Constructed around a guitar riff, "My Sharona" remains a popular song, definitive of early 1980s rock music, and the genre of power pop. It is known for its slamming drums played by Bruce Gary, driving guitar work, and simple, infectious beat. The song has been subject to numerous cover versions, parodies and sampling (see list below).

Its easily recognizable riff that is the core of the song was written by the band's guitarist, Berton Averre, long before he ever joined The Knack. According to lead singer/guitarist Doug Fieger, he met a girl named Sharona (who was 17 at the time), and fell in love with her. Whenever he thought about her, he would think of Averre's riff. The two worked out the structure and melody from there. The girl who inspired the song is Sharona Alperin, now a real estate agent in Los Angeles, California. [1]

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters has stated on more than one occasion that "My Sharona" is his favorite song. His earlier band Nirvana even did a live cover of it. The original song gained some attention in 2005 when it appeared on the playlist of U.S. President George W. Bush's iPod player.[2]

In 2006 Australian TV Show 20 to 1: One Hit Wonders voted The Knack as the greatest "One-Hit Wonder" in history. [Info courtesy: wikipedia.org]

Who names an album To-Rye-Ay?! They have the same vibe as the guy from, Sparks, or that one hit wonder from a couple years back, with the neo-glam geek singing falsetto like Klaus Nomi, on the space ship..momentary musical embolism.

Can this go onthe geek channel??

LOL, I wasn't bashing the clip or anything - my attempt at humour simply backfired.

And I only linked to mine b/c they are, IMHO, linked thematically or in terms of era. If anything - if anything, I was trying to push a one-on-one sift-off between the two vids. This one's obviously winning.

Fact is, before I knew who sang this song, I erroenously thought this was a Bjork song, simply because I had no idea who Whale was. And I only saw the video once on TV, when MuchMusic was doing a special on One Hit Wonders. Not that there's anything wrong with the song or with posting the vid of a OHW - it's still enjoyable to listen to/watch. The only ones suffering are the performers, who suffer from an abbreviated career.

I felt worse, but *now* I feel better.

Eric Prydz - Call On Me music video

vaterunser says...

some information on Eric Prydz:
the guy in the video is not Eric Prydz...
Eric Prydz has released many more tracks since this video under his pseudonyms of Cirez D. and Pryda (which also is the name of his own record label)

so he's no one-hit-wonder at all, his newer tracks are just more undergroundish house and tech-house releases...he's currently one of the most popular tech-house producers around, with tracks like Teaser and Knockout, which were very popular in the scene...he was also a popular producer before he released Call on Me

I'm just giving this information because it's a pity that most people think that Call on Me is the only thing he ever did in his life...
