This is why it is completely illogical (and hypocritical) to complain about racism (disrespect) at the same time you are disrespecting others.

To use your logic w/regard to trees, if I don't want a poison oak tree in my backyard, I must cut down all of my trees, or live with the poison oak, otherwise imstellar will call me illogical and hypocritical.

The real short explanation of why racism is not tolerated, while personal attacks are is that generally society has decided that judging people on their words and deeds is okay, while judging people on the color of their skin (or religious beliefs, or sexual orientation, or any other group classification) is not.

The problem with "black people are monkeys" is that it is disrespectful
The problem with "everyone who eats at mcdonalds is a fatass" is that it is disrespectful
The problem with "fuck all of yall" is that it is disrespectful.

None are polite, but I only think the first one crosses the line. "Everyone who eats at McDonald's is a fatass" sounds like a colorful way of saying McDonald's has fatty food. If that was something like "Fat people are all lazy and stupid", I'd say that crosses the line.

"Fuck all y'all" might even be an appropriate response, if "y'all" mistreated the speaker in some way.

All disrespect is fundamentally equivalent in that it falls under the category of "disrespect" just like dogwoods, pine trees, oak trees, and maple trees all fall under the category of "trees" despite being different manifestations of the same thing.

The problem with "everyone who eats at mcdonalds is a fatass" is that it is disrespectful

All of them are different yet all of them can be labeled disrespect.

hard concept?

Homeopathic A&E - Mitchell & Webb

anyprophet says...

Homeopathy is a fraud on two levels. On the first level they apply chemicals that have an effect opposite to the one you actually want. I.E. taking the active chemical in poison oak/ivy(urushiol)as a cure for a skin rash. This effect is allegedly achieved by diluting the chemical in water. This is the second level of fraud in homeopathy. Common homeopathic treatments are so diluting that the chance of there even being a single molecule of the active ingredient in the dosage is astronomically small.

Now, about acupuncture. There is no evidence that it works as advertised. That is by redirecting qi at your meridians. In fact, there is ample evidence that these meridians were actually a very recent invention and a massive fraud. Any perceived effect acupuncture has is either coincidental or a placebo effect. Which is what many, many recent studies have shown.

Still, holds no candle compared to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Gypsy_Van_Front.jpg

Gypsy home built in 1968 on a 1937 GMC F-16 Chassis. The framework is oak, and the interior is handcrafted in fine woods and leather with antique furniture. It can sleep six (a double bed is located in a loft beneath the dome visible above the cab), and it has a full-sized stove, a sink, a shower, hot and cold running water, a coal burning stove, a living/dining area and a back porch.

Originally named "Leviathan," the truck was present on the first day of building People's Park, April 20, 1969. It was also driven, with friends, to a Spring, 1969 love-in on the top of Mount Tamalpais near San Francisco.

When I was 7, I decided it was time to start listening to the radio, but wasn't sure where to begin. I saw a bus drive by with an ad for 94.7 KHJ country radio (a decade before new age even existed) and tuned in. I remember listening to Eddie Rabbit's 'I Love A Rainy Night', the Oak Ridge Boy's 'Elvira' and Dolly Parton's 9 to 5. It was fun stuff. A couple years later, Michael Jackson and MTV lured me away from country and into pop and R&B.

And yes I do need 2 comments to express how lucky your dad is not to be dead.
It reminds me of a similar story where a massive oak collapsed in a busy and small playground, killing a 8 year old girl, and wounding 3 others.
so tragic.

There's a lot to take from this and be grateful about, not the least of which is the fact that this happened when there were no children in the area.

We're very fortunate to still live in a place that has more trees than people. Its a nice area, and my parents adopted their dog to help keep them in shape. They walk her twice a day, every day, and would play tennis together. My dad's in really great shape for a 50-year-old because of it. This could've been a lot worse, but the sheer randomness of this just boggles my mind.

I have the coolest, most awesome parents in the world. I'm grateful I still have them.

The Great VideoSift Coming -Out Thread (Happy Talk Post)

darkrowan says...

Huh, I'm surprised I haven't posted in this thread as of yet, given how old it is I must have just plain missed it o_O

So anyways: Yo soy un Demonio.... errr I am Dark Rowan, general background noise on the sift. I say little but do read and comment when I feel like it

I'm pretty much a generalist geek with my fingers in web design, gaming, a little video (really need to take that last one up more hobby-wise), music and Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I've been working at a desktop support tech for 4 years (and given a better economy would have moved somewhere else >_<)
My username is interesting mix of things: First part, Dark, is just my personality and humor (c'mon, anyone who thinks this would be siftable has to be disturbed, right?). The latter half actually started as a child hearing 'Roanoke' as 'Rowan Oak', which stuck in my mind even after learning the correct spelling

So with that: All Hail Siftbot, lord and master!

McDonald's Drops 'Hammurderer' Character From Advertising

March 6, 2002 | Issue 38•08

OAK BROOK, IL—Bowing to outcry from consumers and parents groups, the McDonald's Corporation announced Monday that it is discontinuing its new advertising mascot, "The Hammurderer," a mischievous, homicidal imp who kills McDonaldland characters and takes their sandwiches.

Developed by Chicago advertising agency DDB Needham, the Hammurderer made his debut two months ago and has since appeared in a series of Saturday-morning television commercials, as well as on Happy Meal bags and activity placemats. All appearances by and references to the violent, ill-tempered prison escapee will be dropped.

"Over the years, McDonald's has successfully introduced a number of new characters whose defining characteristic is a certain measure of comical, criminal intent," said Andrew Perlich, McDonald's vice-president of promotions. "Such shady characters as The Hamburglar, The Goblins, and the bloodthirsty pirate Captain Crook have all fit nicely into the McDonald's advertising universe. We had every reason to believe that the Hammurderer, with his long rap sheet of burger-related crimes and his signature cry of 'Stabble Stabble Stabble,' would take his place in this proud lineage of McDonaldland mischief-makers."

Situation Critical - Hollywood Shootout

budzos says...

Kinda freaky. I was at work in Sherman Oaks when it happened, but my gf got off work early and couldn't get back to our apartment in North Hollywood because it was inside the area the police cordonned off when they thought there was a 3rd gunman still at large. I was totally fascinated with the incident, it was so unique and so much like the climax of the movie Heat. At the time I thought it was remarkable how little attention it got in L.A. ... it was pretty much forgotten the next week, only popping back up in the news when the mother of one of the shooters sued the LAPD for letting her son bleed out from a head wonund.

Cops Punch and Kick Suspect Laying on the Ground

bobraingod says...

I'm not advocating or decrying the actions taken by the police, but Thursday was a rough day in Howard County. There was a bank robbery that morning in Clarksville on Ten Oaks road, which is a couple exits from where this incident concluded. The bank robbers shot a bank employee, led police in a cross-county car and foot chase (apparently right by where I work! I've got to get a window office), and fired upon officers during the foot chase. One of the suspects was killed during the chase. Article in the Columbia Flier.

There was also a followup article in the Baltimore Sun today concerning Zombro's incident. The officer has been put on administrative leave as part of an investigation. Zombro "was wanted on an open warrant for theft. He had been under surveillance and fled from police when they tried to stop him in Jessup on Thursday afternoon, police said." The article details the charges against Zombro from this incident:

  • six counts of second-degree assault
  • one count of assaulting a law enforcement officer
  • one count of reckless endangerment
  • four drug possession charges
  • four counts of malicious destruction of property
I've mapped out where Zombro's incident started and stopped here. I don't know Zombro's exact route (and I'm pretty sure he didn't take the quickest way to get here as suggested by Google ), but he certainly was on some major roads in the area. While driving, Zombro had to go over I-95, the major north-south highway in the area. The article reference in this post notes that he made a U-turn on route 32, which means he was headed west on route 32, which most likely means he had gone over route 29 once and was headed back to it. Route 29 is the other major north-south highway in this area. Both the bank robbers and Zombro were on route 32 on Thursday.

For the curious, I grew up in Columbia and live a county away now. I drive the road where this happened to get to my parents.
