I will promise you this..

Nithern says...

Eisenhower, when he was leaving the Presidental office, back in '69 mention this, in his farewell address: (and I think its just as important now, as it was then)

"We face a hostile ideology global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose and insidious in method..." He was refering to the growth of communistic threads, as the Cold War was raging at the time.

In addition, he warned against unjustified goverment spending on proposals with the military in mind:

"we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex... Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military-industrial_complex

Mr. Obama and his team, are going up against one of the most entrenched lobbying groups in America. It holds a virtual strangle hold on America, because, as they argue, without them, the USA, wouldn't exist. As such, we must put hundreds of billions towards the defense and military. The USA, spends $560 billion on its defense & military, far larger then the next largest military spending country in the world, which is Russia & Europe with $320 billion. (source: http://www.globalissues.org/article/75/world-military-spending).

Which is kind of amusing, if you think about it. Republicans are/were all angry at the amount of money being spent for Health Care (costing just under $1 trillion over 10 years), but neglect to mention, the first six years of the Iraq war costing the USA Taxpayer $3 trillion dollars.

If Americans want out of the Iraq war, they merely have to contact their elected represenatives, and senators, and say so. Its much easier to complain and do nothing, then to do something about the very reason for the complaining. Until that happens, the USA, will stay in Iraq and Afghanistan. I would imagine, it makes the Iranian military uneased when its leaders talk about blowing up countries and making nuclear technology that is suspected to be for a WMD. Why? The USA has 200,000+ troops on Iran's west and east sides, with deep logistical trains of support, that could unleash HEll, in the event of a military conflict.

Not upvote everything BF (which incidentally is carved onna stone tablet somewhere here on the mountain), love to the pqueque of some fellow sifter(s)-Some folks have a heap of gold in their pqueque, esp. users like paul4dirt, who posts mostly viddies that get his rocks off, but that won't necessarily garner massive attention in the vote category-

Some folks vote front page, others only unpublished, people filter what they will-some use 35 mesh, some 635...what goes through the sieve is entirely up to the filter.

Still think Iran is an imminent threat? Think again. The intelligence also does not mesh with the political rhetoric. Doesn't matter who is in office. The handlers want to push a certain agenda, and that is where the government goes.

How easy is it to fool UFO believers?

You know what they say about tinfoil hats?

Regular tinfoil wont cut it, you need to a layer of tinfoil and some coper mesh and then another layer of tinfoil.

Copper Foil.

Tinfoil just wont cut it, put some copper mesh on your head.

I am a Faraday Nerd, and I want to make one of my upstairs rooms RF proof. Why? For science. Also so I have a place to go when I don't want to be bothered by that pesky 32 ghz phone, or my cell phone.

So when people say, "Go put your tinfoil hat on, I say you do know Faraday's law does work? Its proven, ergo, the tinfoil hat is not a lie. Only the reason for wearing it is a lie."

You're a new-ish species to them, of COURSE they're going to experiment with you. What do you expect?

Have you ever considered joining the Nazis or the Imperial Japanese Army? Your cavalier attitude towards experimenting on sentient beings meshes well with theirs.

"Oh hi intergalactic refugees, we grant you asylum on our planet. Let's try to foster peace and understanding between our species. By the way, the company in charge of your safekeeping during your stay here will also be kidnapping, torturing and murdering a few of your citizens, in an attempt to reverse engineer your awesome weapons for profit. No hard feelings, k? Such action is only expected after first contact."

throbbin et al,

you are clearly okay with disrespecting individuals, and even groups of individuals - but not certain groups of indiviudals?

are you some sort of alien parallel universe time child or something? because your logic just does not mesh with the physical constants of the universe as they exist here on earth in the milky way galaxy circa 2009

How to get dropped items back without taking apart the sink.

AeroMechanical says...

I haven't emptied my trap in a while, and I recall dropping a few things down there though I can't remember what they are anymore.

Quick warning for anyone though. Never ever use your shop vac anywhere near a sewer drain. Those ones in the basement floor are trouble. That's very very bad. It takes a long time and is very unpleasant to clean out your vacuum, you have to buy a new filter, and the basement will be uninhabitable for a while and possibly explode.

Anyways, I think the pantyhose might be a fine enough mesh to keep water out though, so maybe you could use a normal vacuum cleaner.

Addendum: I agree that it's probably easier to just use a wrench. Getting out the shopvac, plugging it in, finding some hosiery, and then putting it all away again probably takes longer anyways.

Someone needs to mash up all the times he said there WAS a connection, and mesh it in with this comment.

Quantum physics and conciousness

This video is an excerpt from a psudeo-science bullshit film, where the writers are trying to somehow mesh actual physics with some meta-physical mind-controlling spirituallity garbage to change the outcome of the universe.
Total bunk science, its just as crazy as scientology, only leaning quite heavily on existing science to try to push its point across.
It would be nice if just thinking could change the universe, but it has zero basis in any established scientific journal. Dont let the real confusing, real science get in the way of the garbage this video is trying to push.

ED-209 - 16000 Poly Model Made In 3D Studio MAX

blutruth says...

Before things get out of hand, I feel that I should chime in with my 2 bits. I have poly modeled a few cars around the 30-40k poly range and can tell you that using that many polies isn't a huge accomplishment. That said, the poly structure is laid out pretty well. Modeling using quads (as was done with this model) makes for a neater looking mesh, but can create headaches when it comes time to render.

In reference to charliem's comment, I'm not sure if there was sarcasm in that post, but I'm going to treat it as though there was not. According to this article, Optimus Prime from the Transformers movie weighed in around 1.8 million polygons.

Memorare is correct though, shaders can hide the poly count of a well-built model. But if the underlying structure is crap, you can shade and mesh-smooth till you're blue in the face and it will still look like crap, just shinier.

What, did the Dag eat your harddrive?

Jesus, you're killing me, teach. Can I get an extension on my paper?

In reply to this comment by srd:
Hmm, ok. No stutter with other apps means that the sound subsystem is basically ok, so it isn't a driver or a hardware issue.

Flash under Linux has always been treated a bit as a lead paint chip eating "special" relative by adobe, so things flash tend to run less smoothly anyway. Thing's I've observed:
Flash is a lot more CPU intensive under linux than under windows; they seem to have implemented especially the flash movie decoding and rendering rather inefficiently. But basic CPU speed shouldn't be a problem in your case, since you have a brand new dual core machine. My EEEBox croaks on HD videos

Flash movies aren't streamed from memory, they're first saved in /tmp, then played back from there once enough is buffered there. This means you have several things going on simultaneously: the flash stream coming in from the network, the flash stream being written to disk, the flash stream being read from disk and finally the decoding and rendering. The last part should be ok. Getting the flash via the network should be OK too, since I'm guessing you can tell the difference between stutter and repeated buffering pauses

So, what we have left is (barring other CPU tasks running that you didn't tell me about): the harddisk. This meshes somewhat with your observations that the problems get worse if lots of movement takes place: the bitrate of the video goes up and more data needs to be read from the disk and processed by the CPUs.

So things you could check (Homework Paintchipboy!): is there another harddisk intensive programm running (to verify my diagnosis: start up a big program like staroffice or the gimp when you're playing a video. Does stutter get worse?)? Is the partition your /tmp directory is on full? Is the harddisk being addressed in UDMA mode (sudo apt-get install hdparm; sudo hdparm /dev/sda - sorry this is keyboard work Fire up 'top' in a console. In the third row from the top you'll see a line of CPU stats. The %wa entry would be interesting while you're experiencing stutter. That's the time the CPU waits for requested data from a storage medium aka Wait Time. You can quit top by pressing 'q'.

I'm guessing your harddisk is basically ok and not damaged because you'd have tons of other problems then.

In reply to this comment by kronosposeidon:
Sorry it took so long to get back to you - been kind of busy. Anyway I haven't noticed the problem with other apps. I've played other audio and video files, and they all seem to wotk fine. It's just Flash video that's the problem. It gets worse with with HD flash. If the images are relatively static there's no problem, but if there's a lot of motion then stuttering occurs.

In reply to this comment by srd:
Are you experiencing stutter with other apps? Playing mp3s for e.g.
