Have you ever seen "live" concert footage? It's the same concept here, except with planets.

Saw that years ago with some friends. Loved it. Great show all around, but there's a scene where Robertson and Scorsese are having a talk that was just priceless. Scorsese is interviewing Robertson. Scorsese talks really fast, typical New Yorker, asks a question and can't shut up long enough to hear the answer. Robertson talks pretty slowly. And I can't remember what Scorsese said, but it sort of implied how slow Robertson was.

Well, there was a fly buzzing around Robertson when Scorsese said that, and Robertson caught it in mid-flight and tossed it on the table between him and Scorsese.

That's how I remember it, anyway.

Robertson is a legend. Oddly, for one who has made such a huge contribution to American music he seems to be known by name to only a few, but everrybody knows his music. I mean just hum a few bars of "The Weight" or "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" or "Up on Cripple Creek" and all of a sudden people go "Oh... yeah I know that one". The guy is a monster guitar player and one of the best American songwriters of the 20th century. The contributions that he has made, along with the rest of The Band can't be overstated, and don't forget that when people talk about Dylan going electric- this was the guy who was his chief collaborator. *quality stuff.

He's probably also one of the worst singers in the world. The Band released 9 LPs with Robertson writing the majority of the material, but he only sang on 2 tracks in total. When the group performed live his microphone was usually turned off or was so low as to be inaudible. The Band played the Woodstock festival, but their set is nowhere to be seen in the movie- the rumour as to why is that Robbie's mic was live and the whole set was ruined.

This track is from his last album, released in 1998- an eternity in rock and roll years. I met Robbie at a book-signing in TO and asked him about any upcoming solo projects, he said he had something in the works- this was about 4 years ago. Takes him a long time to come up with new material I guess- he's only released 4 solo albums since The Band's last LP in 1977. Wikipedia says he's got a project in the works with Clapton. I'll be there in the store on release day.

For fans of Rock, Country, Soul, Folk, Funk, Blues, Roots (am I missing anything) you've got to check out "The Last Waltz" from Martin Scorsese- probably the best live concert ever captured on film.

Dallas green - day old hate

osama1234 says...

I absolutely love his voice. This song highlights what it is i love about his voice, i can't describe it.

It also makes me wonder, becuase I dont know anything about music, as a lot of people say that all musicians today dont sound in real life at all like how they sound in recordings. I wondering what about live concerts, I've heard people say that they still have fancy electronics boxes that all musicians want at their vocals going through it at their shows that change tune etc.

What i mean is, would he sound like he does in this song if he were on the bus singing?? Or is it still electronically modified and not really his voice?

1. Journey - Good Morning Girl

2. The Cure - Disintegration
Stopped to listen to this one all the way through, even though I usually just write down the track name and skip on with these things.

3. Talking Heads - Girls Want to Be with the Girls
Haha, had to listen to this one too.

4. the pillows - Beehive
Live version ripped from the bonus DVD of their latest live concert release, Blue Song With Blue Poppies. They actually stopped in the middle of the song because Sawao forgot the lyrics, then started fresh and rocked it really hard. Wish I could have seen this show.

5. ELLEGARDEN - Surfrider Association
Opening track from BRING YOUR OWN BOARD!! Love these guys. They sound like typical pop punk at a quick listen sometimes, but if you actually give a whole album a chance, you realize that they're fantastic musicians and a huge cut above the drudge that fills up their genre.

6. Pavement - Elevate Me Later
I actually haven't ever paid attention to this track before, but I really love the intro.

7. Ling Tosite Sigure - 鮮やかな殺人 (The Vivid Murderer)
Self-produced demo take, hell fucking yes. Raging, screeching Telecaster guitar solo, rumbling bass lines, and a huge range of dynamics.

8. ART-SCHOOL - LOST IN THE AIR (Tony Doogan mix)
Fan-fucking-tastic song. This mix has more presence to the bass guitar than the original, which creates for a much more atmospheric song. I like very much.

9. GING NANG BOYZ - 駆け抜けて性春 (The Youth Running Past)
God I love this song. Crazy but catchy Japanese punk rock. They record all of their instruments at one go in the studio rather than layering it instrument by instrument, giving a raw, live sound to all their recordings. I wish all rock musicians did this.

10. People in the Box - Paper Trip
Great song, off my favorite album by them.

In reply to this comment by Nithern:
Why isnt stuff like this on Video Sift? Not for just the geek factor, but, that its actual orchestra, playing good music. Look at the top 15 stuff, and rarily do we see something like this, yet, it goes on often. I'd like to see stuff from that organization that does music from video games. Anyone have material from that group, or know its name?

Metal Gear Solid Theme - Eminence Orchestra

A few years ago (forgot when..) me and hubby went to see the 'Videogames Live' concert .. or whatever it was called. Music from games, played by the symphony, a choir.. I remember Martin Leung playing 'Castlevania' on a huge organ! THIS theme, something from WOW, Baba Yetu from Civ IV.. it was just amazing!!
The (theme) songs are just wonderful.. I had never played most of these games, and I was in awe for hearing them for the first time.. I never thought how important the music really is, and how wonderful it is!
BIG upvote!

Yep, VGL is awesome. http://aqfl.net/?q=node/5439 for my visit.

Bomb the Bass ft. Paul Conboy - So Special

Eklek says...

Ah Bomb the Bass is back in collaboration with other artists:)
This track/video bit long but features some interesting melodies and moods I think. It refers to the video for The Prodigy, Smack my bitch up.

Future Chaos: Bomb The Bass in the 21st Century

Quietly in November 2006, news was posted by Simenon on the Bomb The Bass Myspace page that a new album had been recorded, and was about to be mixed. Much later, in January 2008, and again without fanfare through their Myspace page, it was announced that the Future Chaos album would indeed see the light of day - in May of the same year. Performed, for the best part, with Simenon working on a vintage Minimoog synth, the album, which consists of fourteen tracks is said to be more electronic than previous efforts, with the strong use of the Minimoog lending a cohesive feel across the set.

As with all previous Bomb The Bass albums, Future Chaos is a collaborative outing. This time, Simenon has teamed up with former Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age singer, Mark Lanegan, the Krautrock-loving and decidedly un-Japanese Fujiya & Miyagi, and Richard Thair and Jakeone of Toob. Most notable, however, is the appearance of Paul Conboy, who is best known for his partnership with Adrian Corker in A.P.E. and Corker Conboy. Conboy sings on six tracks, has co-written a great deal of the music, and also co-produces alongside Simenon, making this the most collaborative Bomb The Bass album to date. Adam Sky has also become involved with the project, by way of contributing remix duties to a track called Butterfingers.

With Bomb The Bass now up and running as a viable band, rather than production orientated studio entity, live concert dates are being finalised to coincide with the May release of Future Chaos. Again, Paul Conboy will feature, adding keyboards and vocals to the live set-up. Low key warm-up shows were undertaken in February 2008 in Holland - due, no doubt, to Simenon currently residing in Amsterdam. In keeping with the multi-media ethos of the band, video artists will be on hand to scratch video and animation projections over the stage.
