Jimmy Carr rips on Canada

That description doesn't really make sense for a comic. I mean, if people think he's funny... then.. uh, that's it: he is funny. It's like saying "strawberry" is overrated (ie. "You think strawberries taste good, but they don't"). There is no funny (or flavor) standard that we can objectively compare him to and find out that he's not as funny as people think.
He is exactly as funny as people think he is. That's the only definition we can have for funny.
To be clear, lots of things can be overrated. People can think a boxer is great, but then find out he wasn't so good when he fights better opposition. People might think a plan is good, then it fails. People might rate a car's fuel efficiency too high, when we know it's lower. Lots of things have objective ways to test that can be contrasted against people's perceptions.
But if some new comedian comes along and is funnier (and I imagine most people think someone is funnier than Jimmy already - I think David Mitchell is funnier), that doesn't make Jimmy less funny or mean it was wrong to think Jimmy was very funny. If you found him very funny (and lots of people do), then nothing can change that. If you rewatch Jimmy in later years and find him less funny, even that doesn't make him less funny now. Funny isn't a universal truth - it is extremely subjective and constantly changing.
There's lots of things that many people like and I don't. This doesn't make me cooler than everyone, and it doesn't make the thing they like "overrated". It means I like different things.

you forgot to cough.

Ayn Rand Took Government Assistance. (Philosophy Talk Post)

peggedbea says...

meh, close.. but you're missing the symbolism. >> ^blankfist:

So the point is NOT that Ayn Rand rejected social safety nets and in her dying years she used the services she paid for. The point is that she lied about it and tried to cover it up? Fair enough. I don't know enough about her later years to speak one way or another about that.

Morbid Curiosity Leading Many Voters To Support Palin

Turns out, Reagan literally didn't know what was going on.

Ronald Reagan.

Reagan gets a bad rap when really he didn't know what was going on. He spent most of his later years simply saying what rich people told him to say...as GE spokesman and then as President. Everyone knew that if Reagan went off script you had to shut him up or he was going to say something crazy.
If you don't buy it think about this. Ronald Reagan was credited with starting a Revolution, for being the man who formed the modern republican party. Yet after he left office how many interviews did he do? How many experienced journalists went to talk to him about the future of his party and what they should be doing? Nobody of any significance because all the journalists knew he didn't know what was going on, that he wasn't in charge at all.
It was the PATRIOTS!!

Of course, that was the wrong attitude. Too bad you didn't realize that being in a girl-heavy profession has certain advantages in your later years. Alas, piano is actually pretty guy-heavy, and two pianists shouldn't date anyways lest their egos collide... it's true.

Well, at least you have come to grips with your feminine side. Female avatars are always better to look at than guy ones, and if you have to always look at yours then... you know... Myself, sometimes I pick female avatars in RPGs because the toon is better to look at and in MMOs you can get all those nerds to help you do quests by giggling.

Also, apparently one beer makes me talk about random stuff...

Vintage George Carlin: War & American Politics (mash up)

While I agree with a lot of things he said (particularly things he says in this video), people have to remember that he wasn't detained or killed for saying the things he said - as he would have been in many other countries (now or historically).

You forget the Seven Dirty Words escapade with Hoover's FBI. Then the police learned that it wasn't fashionable to arrest a stand-up comedian for being a comedian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Carlin#1970s

So he, was, arrested for what he said, but not what he said in his later years. I still maintain that his comedy took a pessimistic turn when he was arrested for obscenity, and not providing ID to the cops. To which you don't have to do. There is no law that says a citizen has to have an ID just to be a person; will that stop cops from arresting you? Obviously not. That, I would assume, fueled Carlin's creative drive.

Lucy was a goddess... Sexy, talented, obviously smart, and man oh man, was she ever funny! Ricky Ricardo was the perfect foil for Lucy McGillicuddy- their chemistry was the best I've ever seen on the screen. I know that their marriage was unhappy, especially in the later years, I know about the allegations of abuse, I know about their children and the difficulties that they had. I know about all of those things, but the above video is how I choose to remember them- obviously in love, happy, funny, charming, talented.

Thanks for the memories, Lucy and Desi.

Zero Punctuation: Tales Of Monkey Island

From a similar point of view as yahtzee - i first played it when i was a bit young to understand the wit, but replays in later years while a little tired really showed me the genius wit behind it.

I rather enjoyed it. I had to seriously suspend my expectations of a painfully witty and clever game which made me laugh almost as much as it had me scratching my head, but it was alright.

Not bad. It was indeed trying a leeeetle hard to reference the older games and often you didn't have time to get a joke before it was explained to you in detail.

So overall, while fairly funny, i think the review itself didn't quite explain what an old fan might expect from the new games. Needed a better conclusion to bring the points together.

I'm not sure whether you were joking about the accent being brilliant edd... hope not

The Baby That Doesn't Age

Okay, but who would REALLY want to live forever? I mean, wouldn't that get kinda boring?

It would only get boring if technology never moved past where it is today (assuming you're healthy). Besides, extreme longevity isn't the same as immortality.

>> ^andybesy:
Are aging and growing the same thing?

No. At early ages people grow as they age, but that is different than the myriad of degenerative diseases referred to as the "aging process" later in life. Assuming she lives that long, it will be interesting to see how she fares in her later years.

Michael Jackson is Dead, Joins Farrah Fawcett (News Talk Post)

Doc_M says...

My opinion is that if he hadn't gone completely loony, disturbingly weird, and rightly suspect, he might have prevented Madonna from turning the pop world into Britney-Spears-land... It might have been about "MUSIC" rather than about young (sometimes too young) "SEX APPEAL"...

Look at Jackson's "Black or White". Tell me that Britney or any of her mimics had a message like that. Tell me for that that they landed a prime spot on cable TV after the most prominent TV show there was available for just a new MUSIC VIDEO! FFS, he made a Simpsons episode even MORE watched just so people could see his video...!!!

The announcement was similar too:
TONIGHT, following the simpsons WILL BE MICHAEL JACKSON'S NEW MUSIC VIDEO..."

Incredible. And I have no doubt that it had some significant effect. I SAW it happening as I expect anyone who was there at the time did so... in middle America at least... and that is where it was targeted.

Racism is far beyond old news and far beyond acceptable and Michale helped make that possible and I respect that.

His later years sort of destroyed any message he had, but his message was already ingrained in his early listeners and I hope that they won't abandon those good ideals due to his possible mistakes.
