Church and Winehouse-Beat It

bamdrew says...

... maybe worth mentioning that substance abuse is a disease... ( http://www.medicinenet.com/alcohol_abuse_and_alcoholism/article.htm )

I watched an interview with the awesome James Taylor last night in which he talked about how he lost 20 years to substance abuse. It can seem easy from our vantage point to NOT do something like get blitz before performing an MJ song on TV, but as an alcoholic her body and mind truly see it as a necessity... the getting blitz part, that-is.

That's a lovely looking guitar. Yeah, Taylors do have a nice sound - and the Martin vs. Taylor battle is legion.

I play whatever I can - I've never been a great guitarist, but I can sing pretty well, so I play to accompany me. James Taylor, Neil Young and I like taking old 80s rock songs and making them folkish. Scorpions, The Cure etc.

I thought I was seeing correctly. I like the old Martin sound. They get so rich. I used to think I would have a Martin someday but it hasn't happened . . . yet.

I have a Guild D40CNT from about 1977. It looks like this:

Sweet guitar. All my friends are playing Taylors now. I keep thinking mine sounds so good then I hear a Taylor. I have yet to hear a bad one.

What style of music do you play?

In reply to your comment:

'Tis a Martin D-15. It's the cheapest all-wood Martin I could buy - around $799 US. But it's aging nicely and has a great sound.

I'm now wondering if that's a Martin Guitar Dag's holding . . . hmmmmm?

The Zombies - Time of the Season

silvercord says...

This is from Wikipedia:

"Time of the Season" is a song by The Zombies, featured on the 1968 album Odessey and Oracle. The song was written by keyboard player Rod Argent and recorded at Abbey Road Studios in August 1967. Its breakthrough, however, did not occur before 1969, after the band had split up.

The song's characteristics include the unique voice of lead singer Colin Blunstone, the memorable bass riff, and Rod Argent's fast-paced psychedelic improvisation. The lyrics are an archetypical depiction of the emotions surrounding the Summer of Love. It is famous for its call-and-response verses "What's your name? (What's your name?)/Who's your daddy? (Who's your daddy?)/(Is he rich?) Is he rich like me?".

Pop culture occurrences

* The song is the source of the widespread provocative use of the phrase "Who's your daddy?", as popularized in the late 1980's and early 90's by syndicated radio shock jock "The Greaseman".
* This song was played in the background in an episode of The Simpsons, more specifically episode AABF02 ("D'oh-in In the Wind") in which Homer briefly becomes a hippie.
* Also used in the Friends episode "The One With the Flashback". The song plays in a dream sequence where Rachel fantasises about Chandler.
* It was also featured in the Thomas Vinterberg movie Dear Wendy from 2005.
* The song is played during a car ride scene in the 1990 film Awakenings starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams. The song is also featured on the film's soundtrack.
* It featured in one scene of Shanghai Knights.
* It featured in one scene of NBC's miniseries "The '60's" (1999), albeit anachronistically, in a scene dated to late 1965.
* In 2006, C&C used the song in an ad campaign for Bulmers Original Cider.
* In Sprite's 2006 Sublymonal advertising campaign, a chorus of flowers with human faces perform an a capella version of the song's opening.
* During the 2006 playoffs, the New York Mets played it in Shea Stadium as the team took the field.

Cover versions

* On the 2005 Summer Tour, Dave Matthews Band included the song on their setlist. This version was consequently released on the CD and DVD Weekend on the Rocks in 2005.
* Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me - 8. Time of the Season - Big Blue Missile with Scott Weiland.
* Tanya Donelly has covered the song live touring Lovesongs for Underdogs.
* Kurt Elling covers the song in a duo with Cassandra Wilson on The Messenger
* Brooklyn hardcore hip hop rapper, Necro, sampled the song in his X-rated song "Who's Ya Daddy?".
* Ben Taylor, the son of James Taylor and Carly Simon, covered the song on his album "Famous Among the Barns."
* The Twilight Singers have covered the song live on at least one occasion

James Taylor - Fire and Rain

TimothyChenAllen says...

What a beautiful song-- I play that just about every time I pick up the guitar.

Here's the story as I understand it: James Taylor checked into a mental institution with his heroin troubles. While there he met a girl with the same problem. She was released at the end of her treatment, whereupon she relapsed and died. The reference to Flying Machines in pieces on the ground is his band, The Original Flying Machine, that went under when James checked into the institute.

Is that accurate? Does anyone know anything different/more complete? Thanks.

The Beatles - Something

SnakePlissken says...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something ...

During the 1968 recording sessions for The Beatles (also referred to as the White Album), Harrison began working on a song that eventually became "Something". Initially based on an old James Taylor song entitled "Something In The Way She Moves", the song's first lyrics ("Something in the way she moves/Attracts me like no other lover.") were used as filler while the melody was being developed. [1] Harrison later said that "I had a break while Paul was doing some overdubbing so I went into an empty studio and began to write. That's really all there is to it, except the middle took some time to sort out. It didn't go on the White Album because we'd already finished all the tracks."
