Dutch Antiwar Propaganda Clip

bcglorf says...

Anyone know if this is from Belgium or the Netherlands?

I find 'anti-war' sentiment from either country in today's world disgusting. Right now there are a quarter million refugees in the Congo because of the war being fought there. For those unaware, as our media is largely ignoring it, the war is a result of a rebel army fighting to protect the minority tutsi population from extremist Hutu militia groups. Those Hutu militia groups are the ones that fled Rwanda after raping and killing more than half a million people.

Belgium had troops in Rwanda when that atrocity occurred, they even lost some soldiers in it. They were so touched by the loss of their soldiers they attempted to court martial the highest ranking officer in their deployement for "putting men in harms way". That is the stench of an extreme anti-war policy, with over 500,000 people being raped and murdered, heaven forbid the soldiers deployed there do anything to try and stop it. As for the Netherlands, they haven't any troops at all in the Congo today. Anyone believe that the world would respond to Rwanda differently today? Nope, the EU rejected a plea for a mere 3000 troop deployment to the Congo just this week.

I don't consider standing aside while genocide occurs to be 'anti-war', it is cowardice. I would even go so far as to say that those condemning other nations as war mongers for intervening as the real pro-war side.

White People, get over yourselves

QM, you can blame the state of Africa today on the colonial powers. It was the Belgians who created the "Hutu" and "Tutsi" designations. Hugely discriminating between the two groups and instilling the kind of resentment that would end in blood spilling. Seriously, the Belgians (and others) were absolutely savage in their colonies, cutting off limbs with machetes for not working hard enough was routine on their rubber plantations. So the locals were no strangers to ultra violence.

The colonial powers drew borders on maps all over the world, paying no heed to what religous, ethnic or tribal groups were forced together, look at the middle east, the balkans, ireland. They left such a mess behind them, even appointing corrupt dictators before they left, I dont think you can blame the Africans for not being able to clean up such a massive mess of a continent.

"Hotel Rwanda" - Great Moments in Cinema

Farhad2000 says...

Hotel Rwanda is a 2004 biographical and historical drama film about the Rwandan Genocide, directed by Irish filmmaker Terry George. It is a co-production between Canadian, British, Italian, and South African companies, and the first ever co-production between the rival independent film studios Lions Gate Films and United Artists. It was filmed mostly in South Africa, with some second unit filming in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.

The movie is based on the true events that took place during the genocidal violence that erupted in Rwanda between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups in 1994. The central character is Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle), a Hutu who managed the four-star Sabena-owned Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali.
