New Winter Sport: Snow Swimming

Sagemind says...

Meanwhile in the real world...

Canada's first ice swimmer
His name is Paul Duffield and he became Canada’s first Ice Swimmer when he completed a one-mile swim at the Gellatley Bay Aquatic Park on Okanagan Lake.

Emerging from the lake triumphant but cold, he quickly began toweling off as his wife and friends tried to warm him up and keep the blood circulating.

The rules stipulate that the swim must be completed in water with a temperature colder than five degrees Celsius, and the swimmer can only wear a cap and suit (no wetsuit).

(an honour held by only 25 other swimmers worldwide. )

Romney Gives Kudos to Hitler ?

Kofi says...

Of course it matters. The Nazi's did all sorts of horrible experiments on people. Now, do we respect the victims of these experiments by using that data, or do we honour them by refusing to acknowledge any possible scientific legitimacy that their experience/death may have? Furthermore, if we do use the data are we not condoning what was done to them? Do we risk future despots doing the same by claiming "necessary evils" in the name of progress?

Are you happy to become a means to an end for the sake of science and progress? >> ^Gutspiller:

You must stand on the shoulders of other men to progress technology and science. It does not matter whether those men were good or evil if their ideas accomplish your means.

Funny how we go about it. My whole approach now is to sift only obscure stuff that can't expect more than a dozen votes at most. If I get less than 7 I dump them unless I think they're great, which is what I think about most vids I sift. Each to their own, but I think you should let some mature. I have 50-odd in my pqueue...

Man, why do you keep killing vids with 7 or so votes? 7 votes is a badge of honour, especially for the boutique vids you got happening.

Yeah now I remember why started doing it, for some reason I wanted to keep my average votes per video and general quality of submitted videos at a high level, which is now sitting at 34.28 .

personal quality control. Get's to 10 votes on one pass or it gets scraped. Feel free to re-submit it yourself I don't like videos hanging around my personal queue. I'm not sure when I started with this anal habit.. I'll have to ask the other guys in my head.

UK Threatening to Raid Ecuador Embassy to Get Julian Assange

thumpa28 says...

And you sound like his mother. You want him to get away with his crimes because what? He happened to run a company that released something someone else stole? That make sexual assault ok in your book?

Theres been no acting outside the law, except by Assange with the assault, breaking bail, fleeing justice etc. so i really dont see what breaking tradition youre complaining about.

Why should the swedish government do anything more than stick to the extradition process? When has it become a part of the extradition process that the person being extradited sets out the terms of his extradition?
'but Assange is special!'
No, no he isnt, hes just another criminal in hiding. The fact he says he is and that you seriously think that it should affect whether or not he is brought to justice, makes me glad that we have in this country an independent judiciary who rely on more than the latest daily mail opinion for their decision making process.

You're absolutely right. They should stick to the process.
And when Ecuador decides that julian assange's application for asylum is valid and they want to honour it, we should respect that process too. To do anything else would be hypocritical, correct?
If sweden want assange so much, or if america want him so much; let them break diplomatic tradition. Why us? We probably invented half of the traditions for christ sake (i assume diplomacy was established in or before colonial times), if we can't stick to them then who will?
To me it sounds like you simply want assange's blood. Nothing you've said on this topic has made me think you're genuinely after justice. You sound like he's stolen money off you.

Olympic Torch? Who gives a shit?

notarobot says...

When the Olympic torch went through Canada for the Winter Games in Vancouver a couple years ago, there were a few athletes--who worked their asses of and trained really hard for the honour of carrying the torch--followed by about fifty cops in riot gear at all times. Seriously, WTH‽
