Brief History Of Marijuana -- John Fugelsang

Reefie says...

>> ^budzos:
Yes, for fuck's sake. And not this medical marijuana bullshit nonsense. Marijuana should be as legal as tomatoes. The concept of a plant being illegal is insane to me.

Your comment made me think of the vast number of poisonous plants that aren't illegal, plants like buttercups, bracken, St John's Wort, yew trees, rhododendron bushes, privet hedges, all of these are highly toxic and yet are perfectly legal to grow, in fact are very commmonplace. I'm only scratching the surface here. Oh - a good example would be poppies, perfectly legal to grow, definitely poisonous, and can be harvested for opiates (although as far as I know it's the processing of the opiates that is illegal in most countries).

Marijuana isn't toxic, no more harmful than alcohol, and has been shown to offer benefits for both physical and mental illnesses. It's even been shown to help people become more aligned with what is referred to by psychologists as 'neural neutral' - i.e. normal.

Judge Orders Police To Return Marijuana To Couple

pho3n1x says...

SUMMARY: Fifty-four percent of voters approved Amendment 20 on November 7, 2000, which amends the state’s constitution to recognize the medical use of marijuana. The law took effect on June 1, 2001. It removes state-level criminal penalties on the use, possession and cultivation of marijuana by patients who possess written documentation from their physician affirming that he or she suffers from a debilitating condition and advising that they "might benefit from the medical use of marijuana." (Patients must possess this documentation prior to an arrest.) Patients diagnosed with the following illnesses are afforded legal protection under this act: cachexia; cancer; chronic pain; chronic nervous system disorders; epilepsy and other disorders characterized by seizures; glaucoma; HIV or AIDS; multiple sclerosis and other disorders characterized by muscle spasticity; and nausea. Other conditions are subject to approval by the Colorado Board of Health. Patients (or their primary caregivers) may legally possess no more than two ounces of usable marijuana, and may cultivate no more than six marijuana plants. The law establishes a confidential state-run patient registry that issues identification cards to qualifying patients. Patients who do not join the registry or possess greater amounts of marijuana than allowed by law may argue the "affirmative defense of medical necessity" if they are arrested on marijuana charges.

the actual amendment can be found here.

they bypassed the 6 plant limit by far, but they can still argue that since they are a major hub provider, their needs extend to the "affirmative defense of medical necessity".

a news story about it can be found here.
there's an issue with the way the warrant was carried out, so they may win even if the state appeals.

the big issue is that if this goes to a federal level, it's still illegal to possess or distribute marijuana in any amount, regardless of state laws regarding decriminalization.

How did marijuana become so demonized as to become a Schedule I substance?

Fedquip makes Diamond (Sift Talk Post)

"I would change the whole drug policy"

Fedquip says...

Well I sure hope anybody who chooses to be a bus driver for children also doesn't choose to drop acid before he starts his route. What you seem to be doing is considering the worst case scenario.

I don't like it that you think that as soon as drugs become legal every jim bob and harry will be puffing away. Alcohol was prohibited at one point too. It's legal now, civilization still stands.

I know a lot of good people who do drugs responsibly. I would hate to see them in jail. Thats why. Hell I smoke Marijuana all the time, I could go to jail.

Think of the money that is spend housing people in jail. That money could be spent on education. Marijuana has been around since for centuries, it's part of society. The fact that our society puts drugs in the same category as rape and murder has to change.

This documentary may blow your mind.

Louis Theroux - Black Supremacists

benjee says...

Errr...Why make such an irrelevant, futile and self-answered question?

Why does any Gold promote any Sift? Because they like it and think it was under-appreciated at the time, surely?...Isn't that the idea of the SiftBot invocation? To use it as the Sifter (whose earned it) feels it should. I don't question your use of SiftBot save/promote, as I assume you do the same - maybe there's a Sift Talk / FAQ you should read on it (doubly so: as you seem to rarely use them).

I'm very disappointed Theo...I'd expect snipes like this from a less-mature/involved Sifter, such as here. And if you genuinely want the reasons:
1. I'm a huge fan of Louis Thereux
2. The videos interesting, rare and balances out:
3. My Louis Thereux Sift...which had more than twice the votes of this one
4. The link (above) is my own favourite post, and also stars Jozeph's (similarly ignorant to your own) comments - as this one does

I hope my justification passes your eminently high standards...With 3 votes in an hour and a half, this video passes other Sifters!

Hemp For Victory (1943 US Information Film, 13:42)

benjee says...

Obviously, when fighting the Nazi's - the US war-machine couldn't ignore the most useful plant in the world: hemp (or THC-less cannabis, to the layperson). Full of useful information the government has now chosen to ignore, such as "Hemps been used for thousands of years" - since around 6000 B.C. to be correct (predating alcohol by a couple thousand years).

More information on the U.S. Governments illogical & hypocritical war on cannabis can be found here in "Grass" - History of Marijuana Documentary.

Stoned In Suburbia (funny UK Sky One documentary, 43:05)

benjee says...

Farhad - not sure if you've noticed...but my favourite Sift is "Grass" - History of Marijuana Documentary, and I posted this (IE: I'm well experienced in the ways of 'weed'). Yet, I have never heard of '420' - and sorry to say, but the wiki's "Cannabis users gather on April 20 ("4/20" in U.S. dating shorthand) every year to celebrate and consume marijuana. 4:20p.m. (or even a.m.) is also a popular time to consume cannabis." is a little incredulous to me (yeah - I'm going for obscure words now!) But I guess we have a different cannabis culture in the UK to the rest of the world...
