Ok Dag, you got an independent reference for your productivity comment, or is that just based on your observations? Because the only people I see proclaiming that Australian labour has low productivity are people like Rinehart - rich people who would benefit from paying people less. I have seen no good evidence of low Australian labour productivity.>> ^dag:
To be fair - I didn't hear her say that Australians should be paid $2 per day.
And this might sting my Australian mates - but productivity is low in Australia. I'm in Canberra - which is probably low productivity HQ for the whole country.

Economy is best form of birth control.

rbar says...

All of Europe also has low birtrates.

Low birthrate is not the main issue as the total population is still growing due to people getting older. If you try to solve the 4-2-1 problem by having more kids, the total population will keep growing at a much stronger rate as we are still getting older and older. Which means you need more kids again, more people again and the issue just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

The issue is the amount of people in total is exploding. The solution should be sought in finding a balance. Not more kids, but the right amount of kids vs the amount we are growing older. That means getting less kids then we have today, even in Western countries. On top of that we need to look at the world, not just at isolated regions. Economic prosperity can help those regions find more sustainable birth rates as well. So us helping them economically will help us in the end not overpopulating this planet.

NordlichReiter = Tom Cruise?

The ridiculous belief that depression can be cured by "training" your brain to not be depressed is absurd. What randomized control trials can you cite where "brain training" cures depression? (Hint: THERE ARE NONE)

This neo-hippie bullshit propaganda continues to add to the suffering of those with mental illness by dissuading them from getting treatment.

>> ^NordlichReiter:
I think that if a person's brain works on chemical reactions, then all that they need to know is how to cause the chemical reaction that will overcome mental issues. The brain can cause just about any reaction in a body, like an athlete who can forget about the pain. These things are achieved through brain training, which is has low impact on the knees and shoulders so you don't have to worry about injuries.
But that person has to be aware, and this is the difficult part. If a person is not aware that they are in a world that is fake then they will not find the real world. Like a dream, pay attention to things and the seams in the unreality will be revealed.
But then again, it could be like the beautiful mind, were these things can only be lived with, and not defeated.

^Latency will be a crippling issue for most people for a while yet, I think. Maybe forever for some. Can't get around the old speed of light.

The guy in the video already said that latency isn't such a big problem. OnLive is another such service that is almost ready. Here is a video demonstration which also has low lag.
Maybe for high skill FPS the latency would be noticeable. But at a certain point you would have to choose between photo realistic games with a latency of 25-50ms (if it works out well) or worse looking games on your own computer.

I think the ones with quiet audio are worse. I sometimes forget that I cranked up my volume after watching a video that has low audio volume, then go watch one that's normal.
