Dr. Michio Kaku on The Japanese reactor accident
To be sure, an accident at a nuclear facility is always dangerous, but the whole tone of this interview seems like too much fear-mongering for my taste. There are still many steps left until the hypothetical nuclear catastrophy they are talking about, and even though some safety mechanisms failed at Fukushima, many others are still in place.
There is a good reason for the power plant to be located next to the ocean, and that is all the potential cooling water it provides. If it comes to using sea water (which it hasn't yet) it will be very expensive for the company to clean up afterwards, but it will work.
Here's another physicist with a calmer attitude to the event: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2011-03-12/japan-nuclear-fallout-how-bad-could-it-get/
