Yup, me too. Exactly what you described, but they were also a regular pipe smoker. The components were coated with a layer of sticky yellow tar which the dust and cat hairs also got impregnated with. Made air-duster cans almost useless.

I had to use tweezers to get the bulk of the cat hair out the way, then remove the hard-drive and plug it into another PC via an external cable to recover the data.

I think you're probably right—though the same could be said of any shitty job, couldn't it? (And there are *lots* of shitty jobs out there.)

It makes me wonder how long it'll be before companies start buying up landfills in America (on the cheap) to turn a profit on whatever they might salvage. I think it'll definitely happen at some point, probably when we realize we've been throwing away some commodity that's less renewable (and more valuable) than we'd thought.
