High voltage capacitor bank versus Watermelon

Notice the holes are pre-drilled. Do you think they pumped that melon full of something combustible? I guess they are pretty wet inside (I've never American Pie'd one or anything.)

I'd take the guess that such a large amount of direct current caused the water in the watermelon to decompose rapidly to hydrogen and oxygen. Both would expand rapidly, being partial cause to the explosion as pressure inside increased. Additionally, the combination of gases is highly combustible, and any spark generated between the electrodes would be enough to cause them to ignite, causing an additional pressure increase and explosion.

I think the electricity made it explode.

Show Votes On Polls (Sift Talk Post)

ReverendTed says...

>> ^Drax:
Should we vote on this?

How about two votes?
The first vote could be vermillion\maroon\burgundy, with the results completely hidden.
The second vote could be eggshell\offwhite\beige, with the results available live.
Y'know...for kicks, just to see if a trend emerges.

If the Sift would handle it, ideally you'd want to have a single poll split into two, with every other voter secretly taken to a copy of the poll that does or doesn't show the results live.
Plus, electrodes attached to nipples. That's got to be in there somewhere or it isn't Science.

Hardly a minority fyi, most people gay bash online and in real life.
"we" bring it up because its distracting and unnecessary to have in a so-called comedy routine. If he was doing a skit or something then why not. But to dress up like a gay Freddy the Freeloader on stage what did you expect?
I could care less what he is talking about when you have idiots like that on stage. Its like watching carrot top trying to be funny.

You know of that study where they gave subjects a questionnaire to gauge how homophobic they were and then they had them watch homosexual porn with electrodes attached to them. The ones who were the most homophobic were the MOST turned on when seeing gay images.

Fear based on someones appearance, can't we get past this already?

Apple Fanboy Since 1983 (Blog Entry by dag)

schmawy says...

My dad brought home the incredible Macintosh 128k one day and I LOVED it. (apparently the list price was something like $2500 USD in 1984, thanks, Dad!) I spent hours and hours on it. It supported creativity like no other data appliance of the time. I have always appreciated what apple does. I must even recant some of my heretical talk about the iphone.

You said you're getting an iphone this month, Dag. When you go to the apple store, don't be afraid when they put those electrodes on your scalp and you go to that glowing white temple and meet The Mighty Jobs. It's pretty neat.

Conservative radio hosts gets waterboarded, calls it Torture

ShakaUVM says...

Actual terrorists are restrained, roughed up, screamed at, hooded so they don't even see whats about to happen to them, and then forced to undergo this for 15-30 seconds at a time, and undergo it more than 180 times each.

You're perpetuating an incorrect meme here. One terrorist was waterboarded that many times, and only 3 total.

When I was training to be in the Air Force, we had an OSI interrogator come in, and talk about all the dirty tricks they used to get confessions from people. Waterboarding wasn't one of them, being IMO too harsh for the Air Force.

But then again, in SERE training they waterboard the participants, but they certainly don't hook electrodes up to their genitals and run a lot of current through them, or chop different parts of their body off. So I'd say it's somewhere between acceptable practice (none of the OSI stuff disturbed me morally, and I'm someone who is very protective of civil liberties) and torture.

How Mind-Boggling Science Will Outlast the Economic Crisis

I guess I don't see much of a difference between the two. I don't want electrodes sticking out of my head, but if nanobots can some day reverse the damage to the brain through the process of aging then I would have no moral objection to using them (again, after a reasonable level of safety has been established).

I am a firm believer that if you were to have nanobots they would have been produced naturally kind of like white blood cells... I can't see how nanobots is an evolutionary trait....we are meant to live and meant to die....thus continues the circle of life... oh and if you want to work on your neurons in your brain just go get high....take the time and read about pot or watch.... http://www.videosift.com/video/The-Union-The-Business-Behind-Getting-High-1

oh and side note shrooms regardless of where they grow are natural not man made...

With regards to the comments i read. why are we so pleased with putting microchips in our body?

I dunno, why are people so pleased to put chemicals in their bodies? I occasionally ingest psychedelics (mostly shrooms) for insight and perspective. I feel I learn a lot from it, and it has led to a better idea of what I want to do with my life.

There are drugs in development that restore the signal strength of neurons to their younger (healthier) state. There are also drugs currently in testing that give the benefits of exercise without the need for exercise. There will always be the need for evidence that these substances do not have unwanted side effects, but if they prove to be safe and effective then I would certainly take them (I enjoy exercise btw).

I see mechanical means in a similar way. Safety will always be a valid concern, but I know people with hearing implants and they have no problem with that. There are nano-based red blood cells in development/testing that are far more effective than natural biological blood cells. I won't be the first in line to test them, but if they prove to be safe then I will certainly use them.

I guess I don't see much of a difference between the two. I don't want electrodes sticking out of my head, but if nanobots can some day reverse the damage to the brain through the process of aging then I would have no moral objection to using them (again, after a reasonable level of safety has been established).

Breakthrough in storing Solar Energy

efranc65 says...

For those of you wanting to know more about how it works, here is a short description from Science Daily:

"The key component in Nocera and Kanan's new process is a new catalyst that produces oxygen gas from water; another catalyst produces valuable hydrogen gas. The new catalyst consists of cobalt metal, phosphate and an electrode, placed in water. When electricity — whether from a photovoltaic cell, a wind turbine or any other source — runs through the electrode, the cobalt and phosphate form a thin film on the electrode, and oxygen gas is produced.

"Combined with another catalyst, such as platinum, that can produce hydrogen gas from water, the system can duplicate the water splitting reaction that occurs during photosynthesis.

The new catalyst works at room temperature, in neutral pH water, and it's easy to set up, Nocera said. "That's why I know this is going to work. It's so easy to implement," he said.""
