Best Book: Wool. If you like your dystopian post-apocalyptic SF - this is the one.

Best Movie: I enjoyed Argo, Looper and Cloud Atlas - though in general I think this was a poor year for the kinds of films I like.

Best game: As a casual gamer, dare I say, Bad Piggies? ;-)

TV: Will second Breaking Bad - I've actually gotten in to the final season of Merlin with the kids. Also, Season 2 of Game of Thrones and season 3 of Downton. Poor Cousin Matthew!

Music: This year has been a year of nostalgia - I'm listening to almost no new music except the latest from Kate Havnevik.

Just saw it - pretty good gritty SF flick. The interesting thing about SF is that it often reflects on the culture and politics of today. I couldn't help thinking that this was a wholly Libertarian dystopian future. Everyone packing heat and using it to solve problems - and nary a government agency in sight. I mean, absolutely no government.

Honest Trailers - The Hunger Games

Ariane says...

Glad I am not the only one who hated this movie. All good "dystopian" stories must be either DARK or SATIRICAL or both. Even mediocre dystopia like Starship Troopers manages to achieve both.

The Hunger Games manages to do neither. It couldn't be dark because they needed a PG-13 rating, and any satire was undermined by all the bad parts pointed out in this fake trailer.

It's just the Internet - LOL (Sift Talk Post)

I think I've seen the spat in question. It fascinates me how text communication has such a powerful way of getting acrimonious. Even seeing a downvote can, weirdly, bring your blood to the boil.

And I'm a really moderate person!

Personally if I feel someone's being silly I now usually back out as there is rarely, IMO, any chance of them seeing sense.

I bet Tim Berners-Lee thought that the web would foster closer understanding and communication but you only have to look at many sites around the net for a more dystopian view.

Having said that, it doesn't have to be that way and I understand Dag's point. Also Dag I imagine this can be a bit of a burden or perhaps just an annoying distraction so I can just thank you and Lucky for your continued awesomeness and providing the only "community" I've really felt any kind of connection with.

Police Fire On Men Women and Children w/ Non Lethal Rounds

Jaw-dropping. And what's with the term 'officer involved shooting'. That's how the media describes a police shooting these days? Honestly, I am shocked. It's like the opening scene of the new Robocop film or something. Dystopian.

Man of Steel - Teaser Trailer

I loved The Avengers. Bright, colourful, uncomplicated superheroes having fun. The story was very simple but that was needed to allow room for all the characters to breath and interact. As you say a nice script and some good lines.
It's much more my cup of tea than the foreboding, depressing Dark Knight films.

Agreed, but I feel there's room for both.

True, I'm just not rushing to see the Batman film. After I saw the last one it just made me reread The Dark Knight Returns and appreciate how well it's dystopian vision worked on paper. Seeing bits of it used here and there in the films felt wrong. Leaving Miller's work alone might have made the film better.

I actually thought Lost got better in the second season after Abrams left the show. Of course it all came apart in the end.

This looks cool. I've got a soft spot in my heart for dystopian fiction.>> ^HugeJerk:

J.J. Abrams does a good job of finding interesting show ideas, putting together a decent cast, getting a budget for a good looking production... and then leaves the shows to writers who have no idea on where they are going to take it, so it ends up a confusing mess that never has a satisfying pay-off.
