This is why I want a macaw

OMFG this Crocodile is HUGE

I understand why this is confusing as hell;

http://science.kennesaw.edu/~jdirnber/InvertZoo/LecIntro/TreeTime.jpg

... here is a relatively straight-forward 'evolutionary tree' cartoon,... the biggest thing to note is the Time axis... you have to trace the lines to see where species diverge and then look around to see if that line split happens before other line splits with respect to the Time direction.

Even in this simple diagram, you have to look at it for a minute to realize that reptiles, birds and most of the dinosaurs we think of split off from what became mammals, then reptiles split off from that group, then some dinos split off, then birds... So this is to illustrate that the split between what became mammals is farther back in time than the split separating birds and most dinos, and birds and reptiles. So this illustration really functions like a family tree, showing relationships with time and allow you to pick out that birds are closely related to dinosaurs, and that we have to go pretty far back to see where animals diverged into what became mammals and what became reptile/bird/dinosaurs.

If you're interested you should look for bigger ones trees,... when you start including plants, bacteria, archaebacteria, etc.... stuff gets pretty wild because you're reaching the edge of the science... and the complex smaller trees that just cover one group of critters can be really interesting to see... so much variety.

Oh, last note for transparency; they generally make these 'family trees' by researching comparative anatomy and tons of fossils, but have been using DNA to produce new and correct old 'phylogenetic trees' for 20 or 30 years now.

Same logic: What are we then?

Mammals - which birds aren't and dinosaurs weren't.

Yes ok, but Mammals are as much Reptile as Bird are Dinosaur.

Yes, here we go again, give you more, nothing lesser
Back on the mic is the anti-depressor
Ad-Rock, no pressure, yes, we need this
The best is yet to come, and yes, believe dis
Leggo my Eggo while I flex my ego
Sip on prosecco, dressed up tuxedo
Sippin coffee, playin Keno in the casino
Wanna lucky number, ask Mike Dino
I burn the competition like a flamethrower
My rhymes age like wine as I get older
I'm getting bolder, competition is wanin
I got the feelin and assume the lane
And we got a party on the left, a party on the right
We gonna party for the motherfuckin right to fight,

MAKE SOME NOISE IF YA WIT ME!

Zero Punctuation: Fallout: New Vegas

shagen454 says...

Seems like he actually enjoyed this one... This game is pretty awesome. When you get to the town with the dino and a guy helps you find out who shot you and offers up a quest to get rid of some ghouls. TAKE THAT QUEST. One of the best quests in the Fallout series and seemed very underplayed in the dialog - "Oh you don't have to do this, since... but you could take this if you wanted." Seemed very passable. Only problem I've had in the 30 hours I've played so far are a couple of the vaults... I think it was Vault 11 and Vault 34. Both of them suck but one was extremely terribly laid out and buggy. Also, the vault in New Vegas is also too much of a pain in the arse to navigate... so terrible that I took a quest tried to find my way out for 20 minutes and then reloaded my last save... outside that vault and never went back in.

I had no qualms with Fallout 3, which surprised me having been a Fallout fanboy as a teenager... and not really wanting Bethesda to touch the franchise. I loved Fallout 3 but FONV seems to be a more proper Fallout game than 3. Lot's of writing & dialogue with better quality, the factions and return to Fallout's home - the beloved West

The Flinstones pilot - The Flagstones

Sagemind says...

I was lucky enough to take my daughter to one of the last Flintstone Parks a couple of years ago before Hanna Barbara pulled all licensing rights from the theme parks. It's sad to see an era slip away.

My daughter will always have the photos as memories though... driving the bedrock cars, controlling the Fred's big purple dino crane, pumping gas from the woolly mammoth named "Ethel" Going on the log boat safari drinking cactus juice, watching the cartoons on the cave walls and so much more.

The cartoons were a blast as well - sort of the predecessors to the Simpsons..

Penn & Teller: Bullshit! - Soft Drink Tax

NetRunner says...

@blankfist I don't really care what label you give yourself. If lumping you in with "the right" offends you so much, perhaps you should focus more on pulling the other people in that category back into line with something more like what you believe.

Since you never seem to be able to discern my inferences when they're not blunt and explicit, I would say that my point was that Obama-as-candidate was laying out a pretty modest platform of things liberals thought could and should be done in the 2009-2013 time period, not everything the left would ever like to do if given unlimited power to implement the policies they'd like to see.

Obama-as-President with overwhelming majorities in Congress has, predictably, fallen short of even those modest goals. I'd say on the policy level a lot of that was due to the rather high proportion of both caucuses coming from DINOs like Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln.

That said, even if 2008's election had resulted in this fairytale fantasy where my specific conception of leftiness could be implemented switfly and irrevocably, I probably wouldn't have even thought to put farm subsidies on my list of Top 100 Things to Do.

In this world where even passing the most critical, common sense legislation there is (like cap & trade) requires major political battles, we're just not going to waste our energy on something that we don't think is particularly significant.

Ultimately, it's pretty much the same answer to either question at root (the politicians care more about making corporate donors happy than living up to the ideals they claim to hold true), but it does seem like it's more apt to ask why they survived under Bush than it is to ask why they haven't been eliminated by Obama since it supposedly is a priority for you guys, and the Republicans have far better party discipline than Democrats ever have.
