Place de la Concorde Suisse...John McPhee's book exploring Swiss...paranoia...
---All military age men have an automatic weapon at home; the penalties for using it or even open the ammunition other than military duty are severe
---The bridges and tunnels in to the country are rigged with places for Swiss Army Engineers to stick explosives and drop them all
---Airbases tucked into mountain sides; not nuke proof; but damn hard to get at any other way

"in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock. "

Perpetual Motion Machine
@Kalle: Another machine that runs on gravity is an old-fashioned cuckoo clock. It uses a pendulum, yes, but that is to keep time. The energy comes from hanging weights which fall slowly (very slowly) as they deliver energy into the machine (mostly to overcome friction). When the weights reach the floor, somebody needs to come and pull them back up again, thus adding more (potential) energy to the system.
This guy has created an interesting sculpture, but it is not perpetual motion. He is certainly cheating--perhaps with weights hidden inside the central column; hopefully not with a hidden electric motor. He might know that he is cheating or he might just be fooling himself as a result of his stated ignorance of physics.

National Geographic Explorer-Inside LSD
Oh my, this makes me so happy. I love LSD; I took two double dosed tabs once as my first experience and will never forget it. It's definitely nowhere near as scary as the media and public propagates. I took it in my late 20's - the whole time I was thinking about why the $#@% do people lie about this drug as my apartment building opened up like giant drawers and flew by my head like a cuckoo clock.
The most awesome toaster in the history of toasters
Ok toaster design....along the lines of a german cuckoo clock, little Samoan-lookin fellas comes out, carrys the toast to a brick-fire oven kinna motif, the doors close on that, and out the back, Hula women carry the toast to the plate...I'd pay $200 bucks for one a those-
