I still don't really understand why some people in the deaf community are so upset about cochlear implants, claiming it is destroying the deaf community.

To me, it seems like a community of people with missing limbs saying that using artificial limbs is destroying the missing limb community.

Dumb question, but it's a LOST reference right? "LOLZ!.....she's advanced to some future language!" had me cracking up. Thanks for cluing me onto the "hold on to your butts!" reference; I had no idea what that was all about until I watched a video about cochlear implants and then a video from Jurassic Park that included said "butts" reference.

Not a cochlear implant; its a little bone wobbler for people with screwed up eardrums/bones/muscles in their middle ear.
She probably had mostly working components, and heard stuff very faintly. Now its turned up to 11.

At :56 the lady asked "can you hear me" while the girl had her head down and she responded with a head nod. I don't see how she could understand her so clearly if she was completely deaf before.
I also grew up having a friend in my grade who was completely deaf (only could hear VERY loud sounds) While he could talk, his speech wasn't even close to as clear as that.>> ^Hybrid:

A slight correction: according to this article listed on her blog, she began losing her hearing at around 18. She waited 10 years before this opportunity to get the implant.

Regardless, it must've felt like being reunited with an old friend, long thought dead. Very moving.
