Giant Fish Head is Going to Eat You!

moopysnooze says...

I've been looking up Iki Jime after Gee mentioned it and from what I understand it's to accurately and quickly sever the blood vessels and spinal cord with the use of a knife or something like this.

The thing stuck in that fish's head has multiple proggy things and does not look like the ideal device to be using for any accurate spinal cord cutting work.

In any case, this vid is pretty freaky and yeah they are being disrespectful but I care more about if the fish suffered while it was still living. If not, meh... what can you do? You cannot force people to be respectful to everything that they eat. Better than if they were toying around with it while it was alive.

Dinosaurs Died Out Before Man Came Around, Right?

NordlichReiter says...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinosaur#Soft_tissue_and_DNA

One of the best examples of soft-tissue impressions in a fossil dinosaur was discovered in Petraroia, Italy. The discovery was reported in 1998, and described the specimen of a small, very young coelurosaur, Scipionyx samniticus. The fossil includes portions of the intestines, colon, liver, muscles, and windpipe of this immature dinosaur.[45]

In the March 2005 issue of Science, the paleontologist Mary Higby Schweitzer and her team announced the discovery of flexible material resembling actual soft tissue inside a 68-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex leg bone from the Hell Creek Formation in Montana. After recovery, the tissue was rehydrated by the science team.[46]

When the fossilized bone was treated over several weeks to remove mineral content from the fossilized bone-marrow cavity (a process called demineralization), Schweitzer found evidence of intact structures such as blood vessels, bone matrix, and connective tissue (bone fibers). Scrutiny under the microscope further revealed that the putative dinosaur soft tissue had retained fine structures (microstructures) even at the cellular level. The exact nature and composition of this material, and the implications of Schweitzer's discovery, are not yet clear; study and interpretation of the material is ongoing.[46]

Newer research, published in PloS One (30 July 2008), has challenged the claims that the material found is the soft tissue of Tyrannosaurus. Thomas Kaye of the University of Washington and his co-authors contend that what was really inside the tyrannosaur bone was slimy biofilm created by bacteria that coated the voids once occupied by blood vessels and cells.[89] The researchers found that what previously had been identified as remnants of blood cells, because of the presence of iron, were actually framboids, microscopic mineral spheres bearing iron. They found similar spheres in a variety of other fossils from various periods, including an ammonite. In the ammonite they found the spheres in a place where the iron they contain could not have had any relationship to the presence of blood.[90]

The successful extraction of ancient DNA from dinosaur fossils has been reported on two separate occasions, but, upon further inspection and peer review, neither of these reports could be confirmed.[91] However, a functional visual peptide of a theoretical dinosaur has been inferred using analytical phylogenetic reconstruction methods on gene sequences of related modern species such as reptiles and birds.[92] In addition, several proteins, including hemoglobin,[93] have putatively been detected in dinosaur fossils.[94]

Read the 4th paragraph. This video is full of quote mining and general bullshit.

Psychochemical Dumbing-Down of Society

Raigen says...

There's so much wharrgarbl going on in there I almost popped a blood vessel.

Contrary to the "Idiocracy" belief that our society is being "dumbed down", as it were (and, believe me, I still find myself saying this is the case) evidence suggests the opposite is the case. In first world nations across the globe intelligence quotients are rising (and plateauing in some cases, while minority's IQs are still rising), and belief in silly religions and superstitions are falling.

Yes there is Mercury in Thimersol, but it isn't the horrific kind.
Bad Mercury: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylmercury
Thimersol Mercury: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethylmercury

The key words there are "Bioaccumulate": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioaccumulate

For a look at the whole "Vaccines/Thimersol causes Autism" wharrgarbl, I rebuke with a video I posted to the sift a while back: http://videosift.com/video/Do-Vaccines-Cause-Autism-A-Detailed-Examination

Oh, and hey! How about the fact that Dr. Wakefield, the father of the whole Vaccine/Autism debacle with his article published in The Lancet was discredited finally!

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/02/02/and-now-the-antivax-failure-is-complete-the-lancet-withdraws-wakefields-paper/

As for the whole "Flouride" wharrgarbl I'd just recommend reading the Wiki's Article on Water Flouridation, in particular this section right around paragraph 3: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation#Ethics_and_politics

(Emphasis mine)

"Conspiracy theories involving fluoridation are common, and include claims that fluoridation was motivated by protecting the U.S. atomic bomb program from litigation, that (as famously parodied in the film Dr. Strangelove) it is part of a Communist or New World Order plot to take over the world, that it was pioneered by a German chemical company to make people submissive to those in power, that behind the scenes it is promoted by the sugary food or phosphate fertilizer or aluminum industries, or that it is a smokescreen to cover failure to provide dental care to the poor.[19] One such theory is that fluoridation was a public-relations ruse sponsored by fluoride polluters such as the aluminum maker Alcoa and the Manhattan Project, with conspirators that included industrialist Andrew Mellon and the Mellon Institute's researcher Gerald J. Cox, the Kettering Laboratory of the University of Cincinnati, the Federal Security Agency's administrator Oscar R. Ewing, and public-relations strategist Edward Bernays.[84] Specific antifluoridation arguments change to match the spirit of the time.[85]"

The video is right; let's get the facts. And if your facts only support your "New World Order", "omfg they're trying to control our minds" nonsense, well then, those are your "facts". There's a funny thing about why smart people believe weird things; read about it in Michael Shermer's "Why People Believe Weird Things". It showed me the error of some of my foolish beliefs as well.

And I'm at the point where I wonder why I bother doing this, I'm talking to walls and making friends with no one. I guess I just care too much about seeing fear mongering bullshit like this peddled as if it has any rational backing whatsoever.

Female MMA Fighter Chokes Out Reporter

obscenesimian says...

>> ^xxovercastxx:
My understanding is that the blood choke is banned in UFC because it's "dangerous", but I think it's really banned because it's just too fast.

Chokes in MMA are strangulation chokes which may compromise the airway, but are mostly compression of the carotid arteries and jugular veins. Much more force is required to compress the trachea, than is required to impede blood flow.

Police are not allowed to use them, because if applied for too long they can cause death and cops like to get creative and stick things like batons and nightsticks in there which can crush the windpipe or break the hyoid bone.

In MMA chokes that involve the blood vessels of the neck are perfectly safe as long as the ref and medical staff are able to respond after loss of consciousness.

BTW, one could conceivably train anyone to choke out a reporter with a rear naked if they don't think it's coming.

Snuff Policy Revisited (Sift Talk Post)

NordlichReiter says...

You cant tell in the majority of videos posted by people if some one died, in the sift.

If the viewers have a visceral gut reaction to something that almost causes you to wretch, then you know its gone to far.

However in some youtube videos you can.

Search "f1 hits man" you will find the video, which is a documentary, however it does fit the sift snuff policy.

I submit that videos such as this fit the description of snuff, as defined by the Sift Guidelines.

Warning if you click on the link and watch the video I am not to be held liable for your reaction. Enter at your own risk. NOTE THIS LINK DOES NOT TAKE YOU TO THE VIDEO IT SELF. ONLY THE YOUTUBE SEARCH PAGE, THAT SHOWS THE NUMBER OF EMBEDS.

This link depicts the accident that killed Tom Pryce
There was an accident on the F1 Track. Causing the Race Marshals to come onto the track to put out a fire. One of the marshals carrying a fire extinguisher doesn't clear Tom Pryce's car. The marshal is torn up very badly, and the fire extinguisher kills Tom Pryce's. This footage is news worthy's, but extremely egregious.

Then there are videos that depict hockey players who have had their large blood vessels severed to music. That violates the policy, because it places no context on the situation. Only revels in the spilling of bodily fluids to music.

An Overview Of Migraines

mauz15 says...

Migraines are characterized by throbbing correct?

I don't know if this is known to people who suffer from migraines, since I have never had one but caffeine, being a vasoconstrictor, can constrict the blood vessels which become inflamed during migraines. This also is why sometimes a caffeine withdrawal can trigger them though. So it is better to not consume too much caffeine if you suffer from migraines but it may help if you take your usual medicine to relieve them along with caffeine when the migraine is taking place. I don't know how effective it can be, since this could vary from person to person. This is just something I remember hearing from a neurologist.

Robert Fischell has been working on a portable device that uses magnetic pulses to 'cancel out' or depolarize the electrical pulses present in the brain when a migraine is occurring.

For those interested, a TED talk of Robert Fischell where he talks about this (starts at minute 11:14):

I'm over it for the most part. My mom keeps saying this is pay back. Whore.

Well, obviously you were in a good place. You were at my profile page!

And way to give to the Sift. It's admirable.

Oh you poor thing. Are you over the violent puking yet or is that still going on?

I'm pimping all over the place. As you can see from my name color, I've lavished a charter on myself - I think I'm worth it - and other than that I've just finished up a bunch of exams, so I'm in a good place right now.

Ahhh, le sigh. It goes, painfully. I burst blood vessels all over my face and in my eyes from puking violently. >_< I look like I got sunburned, kinda.
Other than that, all is well!

How goes the pimpery?

I think you burst a blood vessel in the common sense area of your brain by trying so hard to be funny.

Kindly explain how this violates anything when the submitter is gwiz665, who had nothing to do with the SiftUp or the creation of this video.

Puking. Guts. Out. (Blog Entry by UsesProzac)

I second the burst-blood-vessel explanation for vomiting blood; it happened to me during a case of gastro*. Bright red. I did haul myself off to the doc promptly and he explained what it was and prescribed nothing by mouth except water for the next 36 hours.

Puking. Guts. Out. (Blog Entry by UsesProzac)

Kreegath says...

If you've been throwing up alot recently you might've popped a blood vessel in your throat, hence the blood. If that's the case, it's not as much serious as it's disturbing.

Coiling a cerebral aneurysm

snoozedoctor says...

As long as the coils remain outside the blood vessel proper, nothing bad will come of them. Trance is right, at some point in the future we will see nanotech that allows things we never could have imagined.

Coiling a cerebral aneurysm

snoozedoctor says...

The clot organizes (solidifies and contracts) but the aneurysm remains a bud extending from the vessel wall. After coiling, the aneurysm is easily seen on a regular X-ray (which doesn't ordinarily show blood vessels at all) by the little ball of coils.

What is really neat about these procedures is how the interventional radiologists can manipulate those little guidewires up through all the twists and turns and into an aneurysm. They squirt some radio-opaque dye into the cerebral circulation and take an X-ray to see the vessels (angiogram). This image is stored and serves as a "roadmap" to where they need to go. Deploying coils into a broad necked aneurysm can be a little disconcerting. If the coil pops out of the aneurysm prematurely, it will flow downstream into the cerebral vessel, occlude it, and probably result in a stroke. That's why some aneurysms still have to be surgically clipped. Sometimes the structure of the aneurysm is just not right or safe for deployment of coils.
