Great Cinema - No Man's Land (Nicija Zemlja)

Farhad2000 says...

No Man's Land (Bosnian: Ničija Zemlja) is a war drama that is set in the midst of the Bosnian war in 1993. The film is a parable with a tone of ironic black comedy. The film marked the debut of writer and director Danis Tanović. The film is a co-production between companies in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Italy, France, Belgium and the UK.

No Man's Land has been compared to The Good Soldier Švejk, Catch-22, M*A*S*H and Waiting for Godot for containing equal parts of irony and futility.

* Best Foreign Language Film, 2003 74th Annual Academy Awards
* Best Foreign Language Film, 2002 Golden Globe Award
* Best Screenplay, 2001 Cannes Film Festival

No Man's Land won Prix du scénario at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by numerous awards, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001, while in competition with French Amélie. Tanović was presented the Oscar by John Travolta and Sharon Stone. Briefly after, Tanović thanked everyone who worked with him on the film and supported its creation. He ended his acceptance speech by saying, "This is for my country".

In total, No Man's Land won 42 awards, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, the European Film Academy Award for Best Screenplay, the César Award for Best Debut in 2002 and the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002. It is probably the most awarded first feature film in a history of film making.

Jawbreaker Trailer

dotdude says...

This black comedy came out a decade after "Heathers." It was in your face and meaner. The scene I remember most has a four-girl-clique walking down the hall as Imperial Teen's "Yoo Hoo" plays. Pieces of the clip are in the trailer. I had hoped to find some good scenes, but the trailer did a better job of capturing the spirit of the film. Pam Greer plays a detective in the story.

Cannibal! The Musical - Original "Trailer" by Trey Parker

daphne says...

This is the original movie "trailer" that Trey Parker filmed for his thesis project. Everyone loved it so much that he and Matt Stone decided to actually do the film. This is probably the first time a trailer was made before the film.

Sadly, since Parker and Stone had yet to send out that (in)famous Christmas card via e-mail, they ended up selling the film rights to Troma Video...they no longer own this delicious black comedy.

The original title to the film was "Alfred Packer: The Musical" but Troma execs feared that no one outside of Colorado would know who Alfred Packer was...so the title was changed.

This film is based on true events. Alfred Packer holds the distinguished title of being the only American to have ever been convicted of cannibalism. The names of horses have been changed to insult ex-fiances.

Chaplin Dictator Speech

sfjocko says...

From the Wikipedia:

The final dramatic speech in his 1940 film The Great Dictator, which was critical of patriotic nationalism, was highly controversial, as was his vocal public support for the opening of a second European front in 1942 to assist the Soviet Union in World War II. The critical view of capitalism in his 1947 black comedy Monsieur Verdoux was also controversial, with the film being protested at many US cities. His European-made film A King in New York (1957) satirized the political persecution and paranioa which had forced him to leave the US five years earlier. After this film, Chaplin lost interest in making overt political statements, later saying that comedians and clowns should be apolitical and "above politics".
