Please Help Find Young Girl Madeleine - Up Vote This!!!

First of all, your proposition is not double blind.

Secondly, your assumption with your argument is that the mere possibility of this girl being helped by somebody on this site watching the video, no matter how small, is enough to make this worth it. The reason why BL spoke about the probability of her being found due to VS's involvement is that it fits into a cost-benefit analysis.

I'll ask you this: if any single slim chance of the girl being helped is enough to make upvoting this sift worth it, then what about outside of the VS community? There's also the possibility of somebody you know having seen her. Are you telling this story to every person you know? How about every stranger you meet? People at work? Every extended relative?

Even better yet, every dollar could count, to hire private investigators or search teams or whatever. Why wouldn't Beckham, who is not exactly a poor guy, donate half his savings to help this girl? That could significantly boost the chance of her being found.

The reason for this comes back to the cost-benefit analysis, which is based on the probability of each thing leading to her being found. We make these kind of judgements every day, for donations to charities, for giving aid to third world countries, and many other things. And in this case, there's such a negligible probability for this video to have any benefit in this situation that I'm fine with downvoting it.

And finally I downvoted this mostly because this is just Beckham whoring himself to the media, trying to get some good press off the misfortune of a family. I stand by my decision, and I'll continue to downvote videos like this one as they come to VideoSift.

I really can't stand Beckham, overrated as a footballer, dim as a 5W light bulb and with an unhealthy fixation on celebrity. Even in this clip he struggled to say what was on the autocue. It does confirm what a media circus this sad event has become. As Farhad states there are plenty of kids who go missing and die each month.
In the UK about 1000 young people die each month, mainly down to accidents and disease. Incidents like this are incredibly rare, maybe there are 5-10 cases in one year in the UK. Some years there are even less. Still because of the rarity the event becomes an obsessive point of interest for the media.

At this point I have to speculate, somewhat cynically, as to why Beckham has become involved. Beckham watchers will know the man is a seasoned publicity seeker now on the verge of a another money-making move to America. What does his involvement in this really achieve? Is there anyone who doesn't already know about the girl's disappearance? What was the thinking behind Beckham's appeal? If it's the power of celebrity then I don't know why Elton John and Ozzy Osbourne aren't being miked up as we speak. I don't doubt the man cares but there is always an element of self-interest in everything he does I'm afraid.

Horizon: Battle Of The Brains (intelligence theory & tests)

yaroslavvb says...

It's pointless to ask "is this a better way to measure intelligence" since intelligence could mean different things (ie, David Beckham with "football intelligence")

Instead they could ask -- is there a better test to do what IQ test is being used for right now? I can see three ways it's being used off the top of my head: IQ-test-like questions in technical interviews for engineers, determining fitness to stand trial, determining which children to place in special education programs

IQ-tests have stuck around largely unchanged, and that's because they are good for what they are used for. Who cares if the kid has high emotional intelligence (except making them feel better), but sucks at Stanford-Binet...they'll still be better off in a special education program for low IQ-scorers
