Great Moments in Cinema - Werckmeister Harmonies

Farhad2000 says...

A favorite of mine. There are few movies that make one swell with emotion, for me they were Schindler's List and Bambi when i was younger. I now add this film alongside them.

Werckmeister Harmonies (Werckmeister harmóniák) is a 2000 Hungarian film directed by Béla Tarr.

At once horrifically bleak and breathtakingly beautiful, the film - shot in black and white and composed of only thirty-nine languidly paced shots - describes the aimlessness and anomie of a small town on the Hungarian plain that falls under the fascist influence of a sinister traveling circus lugging the immense body of a whale in its tow. A young man named Janos tries to keep order in the increasingly restless town even as he begins to lose his faith in the unnatural and disordered universe from which God Himself seems to have disappeared.

The title refers to the baroque musical theorist Andreas Werckmeister. György Eszter, a major character in the film, gives a monologue propounding a theory that Werckmeister's harmonic principles are responsible for aesthetic and philosophical problems in all music since, which need to be undone by a new theory of tuning and harmony.

Possibly the best police chase of all time

I understand Krupo's obsession with GTA, but the majority of viewers don't share the flashback. The trees remind me of the forest where Bambi lived, but that doesn't qualify this for the cute channel. Great video, though. *nochannel

My biggest gauge as to what might not belong in a channel is if while I'm actually browsing the actual channel I'm hit by the "What's that doing here?" feeling, which I was in this case.

Watership Down - Introduction

In the world of anime there have been 2 feature length productions that took it to a whole new level.

The first was Akira, which was revolutionary at the time because it was the first anime ever to fully lip synch and animate conversations, whereas before the characters were made to stand still while only their mouths moved.

The second was Ghost In The Shell, one of the first animes to blend CG artwork with classical methods. As well as one of the first to use CG color grading.

The third one which I did not mention because it's a personal choice is Millienium Actress. Which was the second anime ever to really move me on a deeply emotional level, and prove to me why film could never fully capture what anime could achieve. Before it was Grave of the Fireflies, which along with Bambi were the only animated films to ever make me cry.
