Movies I've Walked Out of Because they're Really, Really Bad: a List (Blog Entry by dag)

What can I say - I enjoyed it. Maybe because I had really low expectations - for the first half, I thought I was watching a crappy supernatural thriller. The plane crash was a scene right out of one of my nightmares. Alex Proyas, the Director (Dark City) shot it beautifully - in a dreamlike way. It really was like watching a dream - the plane crash and flaming moose being just a couple of examples of that. >> ^dystopianfuturetoday:
Also, I've got a bone to pick with dag. Although you generally have great taste in movies, Knowing was fucking horrible. Fuh. King. Whore. Ih. Ball.
Issy and I had some friends over, and I said "Hey, I've got Knowing on DVD from Netflix."
"It got bad reviews"
"A friend with good taste recommended it"
Then we started it up and, like.... WOW. The plot, the twists. Yikes. The best part was the flaming moose...<

The funniest thing I've seen in a long time (Blog Entry by Sarzy)

Ah Moon, I love that. That's an example of the joy of keeping something simple and ending up with something far more complex. And marvelous acting of course. Just sticking Sam Rockwell in Inception would have improved it 100 times over.

I'm with you Deano. Total Recall, for all it's sugar-candy pop-coating- was a much more enjoyable SF movie. Dark City or any Alex Proyas movie is also better. The accolades this movie received are undeserved - I wish Moon had gotten a quarter of the hype.
>> ^Deano:
Oh and one more thing while I'm fuming. Several weeks ago as part of the PR blitz for the film, it was suggested that Nolan is a modern Stanley Kubrick.
To which I say - in your dreams Nolan, in your dreams.

Alien: Ripley, survivor of the Nostromo

budzos says...

As a hardcore fan of this franchise, Alien Ressurection is acceptable to me right up to the point where the Ripley clone fucks an alien and produces a really lame looking new super-alien. If you stop the movie when Ripley gets sucked into the floor and assume everyone dies, it's a respectable attempt at an Alien movie in the vein of Dark Horse's comic books.

I rewatched Alien Vs Predator last night, and it was half completely retarded, and half not that bad. Basically any scenes involving aliens and predators are really cool. The movie's problem is the bullshit with the pyramid and the fact that most of the characters are retarded.

I also think it's okay if the movies are not completely consistent. Alien was scary and slow-paced. Aliens was scary with balls to the wall action (best movie ever made if you ask me). Alien 3 was scary and slow-paced. Alien Resurrection was not scary but had quite a bit of action. So maybe if they ever make an Alien 5 it will be really scary. I actually just typed in "I'd like to see David Fincher do an Alien film" only to remember he did Alien 3. So how about Alex Proyas for the next scary one and then Zack Snyder for the next action-oriented sequel? I'd love a new alien movie every two or three years.

Dark City - Music Video

Farhad2000 says...

Dark City is a underrated sci-fi classic, which I liked and enjoyed more then The Matrix. This is an excellent music video for the film using Rammstein track Sonne. Also featuring Jack Bauer.

Dark City is a 1998 film written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer, and directed by Proyas. It stars Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jennifer Connelly. While not a box office hit, it has a considerable reputation. Film critic Roger Ebert is a well-known fan of the movie, having rated it with four stars out of four and naming it the best film of 1998. Ebert uses it in his teaching, and also appears on a commentary track for the DVD.

The story begins with a man waking in a hotel room with no memory, which soon proves to be but one of many troubles. He is being sought by police, who believe him to be a serial killer, and also by a group of mysterious men with psychokinetic powers. Furthermore, something appears to be wrong with the world at large: time, memory, and identity behave in unusual ways. The film is dedicated to the memory of Dennis Potter, which may be considered a useful indicator of the style of the story. The style of the film might also be said to owe something to Expressionism and film noir, and may be considered neo-noir.
