Man of Steel - "Fate of Your Planet" Official Trailer

braschlosan says...

Traditionally there are separate channels (left right center etc) and if you want to make a sound come from above and slightly left an audio engineer would put a little in the left, a little in the center and maybe a small amount in reverse phase in the rear speaker. This worked but theaters have different sizes and layouts so it was never perfect.

Atmos takes a totally different approach. it can have 30-200 channels (iirc). Each speaker is on its own monitored channel and it is specifically tuned for that room. The ATMOS processor decides the exact amount of sound to each speaker on the fly from the "3d soundtrack." When making the movie the sound field is represented as a half sphere and the audio engineer places sounds around this.

What it means is that the theater shape/size/number of speakers and other factors add/subtract nothing from the experience. Not only that but each speaker is monitored for health so it can compensate and alert staff.

The important part is that with so many speakers being able to be addressed independently sounds can transition around the room completely smooth. If you had your eyes closed a helicopter circling your head and landing will transition around naturally.

There aren't many theaters that have it yet since they have to tear up the ceiling to add so many speakers (its usually every other ceiling tile front to back in two columns!). In the San Francisco Bay Area there are only three specific theater room that have it - One on the top floor of AMC Van Ness SF, One at the AMC Metreon SF and one at the Century theater in Fremont.

I's assuming Atmos is some sort of atmospheric surround sound for a theater? I hope the Alamo Drafthouse of Kansas City has that, because that's the only theater worth going to.

How does he do it?

DonanFear says...

That was lame... He switches the tiles when he cuts the video. Count the tiles at 0:55 and you'll notice he has half a row more than before the cut. Same thing at 2:35 but now he has half a row less. After the shuffling he ends up with 9 rows that fit perfectly in the frame.

How do you feel about the current promote system? (User Poll by Hybrid)

chingalera says...

My beefs with the new promote set-up include, time spent in and amount of promoted videos available to watch and the lack of a handy "RECENTLY PROMOTED" tab all it's own. I like to rifle through promotes, beggar's chasm, and deadpool, in that order when I log in and begin flagrantly slinging votes around for reasons non-linear.

I kinna dig Hybrids mock-up but the teensy tile gallery is too teensy...A "recently promoted" tab can make that all go away. Maybe let them stay in the recently promoted area a bit longer?? Users from such varied time zones here get shafted when somethings promoted while frequent users are sleeping.

If there is more than one promoted video now, the others get hidden. The "next video" link is basically invisible, especially for users not familiar with the site.
This is the mockup @Hybrid made. http://i.imgur.com/85T5i.jpg
And it's tenfolds better than status quo, imo.

Pretty Much The Best Weed Dealer There Is

SDGundamX says...

Loved the video, but I wouldn't recommend dealing in RL.

Had two friends who were into it college. One kept smoking his own supply to the point where he not only was losing money, but eventually got kicked out of school because he was always too wasted to go to class.

The other guy gave up dealing when a deal went bad and the "clients" pulled out 9mm handguns, forced him into the bathroom, and pistol-whipped him until he gave up both his stash and where the money was. While lying on the cold tile bathroom floor with a gun to the back of his head, he decided the money from dealing wasn't worth the associated risks.

How Predictable are you?

Wow...your ability to overcome his previously flawless and incredible psychic powers is truly fantastic and you are a hero for defeating his genius system. You are a force to be reckoned with!

I didn't ignore any of his directions! He said horizontal and vertical, so I went horizontal and vertical. It's not my fault your stupid game can't predict me!

I moved right from the start to wrap over to the V. He was wrong as soon as he said your hand is either "here" or "here". Then I landed on the house after seven moves, and he was wrong again, but this time I didn't have a tile for my finger so I couldn't see how much wronger he could be.

....does not follow directions well and yay...basic math.

Even 20 years later, I still remember which of those wall tiles provide access to secret areas, yet I can't remember what I had for lunch on Friday. Way to go, brain.

Haha, me too. But do you remember ALL the secrets in the whole game? I am bad with DOOM 1-2 as well. Ah, my teen(age) days.
