ROBBIE ROBERTSON-unbound (original video)

rougy says...

@therealblankman:

"...you've got to check out "The Last Waltz" from Martin Scorsese- probably the best live concert ever captured on film."

Saw that years ago with some friends. Loved it. Great show all around, but there's a scene where Robertson and Scorsese are having a talk that was just priceless. Scorsese is interviewing Robertson. Scorsese talks really fast, typical New Yorker, asks a question and can't shut up long enough to hear the answer. Robertson talks pretty slowly. And I can't remember what Scorsese said, but it sort of implied how slow Robertson was.

Well, there was a fly buzzing around Robertson when Scorsese said that, and Robertson caught it in mid-flight and tossed it on the table between him and Scorsese.

That's how I remember it, anyway.

CNN: Did Texas execute an innocent man?

joe2 says...

very long detailed article in the New Yorker (i think... might have been NY Times) explains the entire history of this case and what happened. apparently the "experts" who worked in the texas town didn't have any science education, they basically took one class on arson to become an "expert."

and the proof that it was arson - black triangles on the walls, burned pools on the floor, spiderweb cracks in the glass, wood burnt under aluminum door frame - are all caused by normal accidental fires. there was NO actual evidence of arson.

the guy who is pretty much considered the world's leading expert on arson (craig beyler) did the last brief which went to the governor 88 mins before execution and he said it was DEFINITELY not arson.

so yeah, he murdered an innocent man.

Surprise High Fives in NYC!

videosiftbannedme says...

I don't think the video would have been as effective if he hadn't employed the classical music and silent-era title cards. And sadly, I'll bet that's the only way you could actually get a New Yorker to give you a high five. If he had just walked up on the street and did it, 49 times out of 50 he'd been told to go shove it.

The "Old Lady" is Janet Flanner...

"Janet Flanner (13 March, 1892 - 7 November, 1978) was an American writer and journalist who served as the Paris correspondent of The New Yorker magazine from 1925 until she retired in 1975. She wrote under the pen name Genet. She also published a single novel, The Cubical City, set in New York City.[wikip.]

"WE'RE SCREWED" - Special Edition NY Post Stuns New Yorkers

ulysses1904 says...

The video description starts with "nearly a million New Yorkers were stunned by the appearance of a "special edition" New York Post".

I'm curious as to where they got that number, is it that they printed "nearly a million" copies? And they assumed that every copy was read, and that every reader was "stunned"?

Just pointing out what I consider the kind of lame writing skills that you would probably find in the Post. How about "thousands of New Yorkers were greeted by the appearance"?

"WE'RE SCREWED" - Special Edition NY Post Stuns New Yorkers

EDD says...

Early this morning, nearly a million New Yorkers were stunned by the appearance of a "special edition" New York Post blaring headlines that their city could face deadly heat waves, extreme flooding, and other lethal effects of global warming within the next few decades. The most alarming thing about it: the news came from an official City report.

Although the 32-page New York Post is a fake, everything in it is 100% true, with all facts carefully checked by a team of editors and climate change experts.

Distributed by over 2000 volunteers throughout New York City, the paper has been created by The Yes Men and a coalition of activists as a wake-up call to action on
climate change. It appears one day before a UN summit where Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon will push 100 world leaders to make serious commitments to reduce carbon
emissions in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate conference in December. Ban has said that the world has "less than 10 years to halt (the) global rise in
greenhouse gas emissions if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences for people and the planet," adding that Copenhagen is a "once-in-a-generation opportunity."

"This could be, and should be, a real New York Post," said Andy Bichlbaum of the Yes Men. "Climate change is the biggest threat civilization has ever faced, and it should be in the headlines of every paper, every day until we solve the problem."

Bush Was Warned About Katrina

longde says...

How are people without cars and money supposed to evacuate? Stop blaming the people for this disaster. It's the same as blaming New Yorkers for 9/11. They had already had one attack on the WTC, so they should have known better, right?

Disgusting.

The Difference Between the English and Americans

rougy says...

Interesting.

1) There is some truth to an Oregonian being little or nothing like a New Yorker, or a New Mexican, or a Texan.

2) "England isn't classist" is a laughable statement; it is one of the most class-conscious places in the western world. A person's accent there alone has a lot to do with how that person is treated, viewed, and what is expected of them, much more so than in America since England is so small.

3) It's true that America doesn't seem to value justice very much, and though it may be a relative term, its pursuit is at the very heart of all the laws that we write and enforce.

And interesting chat. Would have been better if they were drunk (with me).

Kool Moe Dee - I Go To Work

MrFisk says...

I go to work
Like a doctor
When I rock the mic
You got to like
The way I operate
I make miracles happen
Just from rappin'
I'm so lyrically potent
And I'm flowin'
And explodin'
On the scene mean
I got the potential
To make you go
Then chill
I got the credentials
That is of which I chose
To make a rhyme
And chill
Then you know
I will fulfill
To make a couple of mill
As I build a guild
For all the rappers and skills
And kill the weak rappers and no thrills
Hang 'em an ephigy
If he's a sucker
Hang 'em to the left of me
Cause my right hand man
Is my mic stand and
The microphone that I own
And my game plan
Is keeping at a steady pace
Ain't no need for a rush
It ain't no race
I'ma hit the top
Just when I wanna
And it's a matter of time
And I'm gonna
Cause I know when to
Go 'head enter
The classic Moe Dee rap
That sent ya
Runnin' around
Holdin' ya head
Askin' ya homeboy
Yo man
You hear what he said
Another funky rhythm
Look at ya man
And give him a high five
Cause I'm live
Runnin' around with him
Telling everybody
Hanging out on the block
It's time to wake up
And check the clock
Punch it
I go to work
I go to work
I go to work
Like an architect
I build a rhyme some times it climbs so erect
Skyscrapers look like atoms
Cars electrons rollin' in patterns
Writing out word after word
With each letter it becomes visably better
Cause my foundation built a nation of rappers
And after I came off vaction
I came to roam
The land I own
And stand alone on the microphone
Daddy's home
Open the door playtime is over
Time to go to work and show the
Suckers in the place who run their face
The base and a taste of who's the ace
Start the race
I'm coming in first
With each verse
I build a curse
So rappers can't capture Moe Dee's rapture
After I got ya
I have to slap ya
Senseless with
Endless rhymes don't pretned this
Is anything short of stupendous
And when this rhyme is done
Your mind will become
So trapped in the rap
You'll lust on another one
You gotta wait it takes time
I don't write I build a rhyme
I draw plans draft the diagrams
An architect in effect
And it slams
And if it's weak when I'm done
Renovate and build another one
I go to work
I go to work
I go to work
Like a boxer
Train the brain and aim
To out fox ya
Like a punch my rhyme knocks ya
Some times it rocks ya
So hard it stops ya
Dead in your tracks
So power packed
Before you can react
You're flat on your back
Down for the count
Get up and dismount
Cause I'm coming
With an endless amount
Of words in a hurry
Like a flurry
A collage to camouflage
The power punch but don't worry
Knowledge is an antidote
I got hand of smoke
Writing at the speed of light with insight
I wrote
Rhymes at a level
So you can't relate
Unless you're intelligent
So stay awake
Sleepwalkers
Slick talkers
This time a native New Yorker's
Riding a crescendo wave to save the mental
State of the fan so he can understand my pencil
Rhymes in its highest form
I'm a drop it on ya like a bomb
When it explodes I'll blow up
A few casualties but so what
If you're slow
You blow
You know you go
I flow
I throw all pro
I go to work
I go to work
To say rap is not work
Is ludicrous
Whoever said it
Must be new to this
When you hear me
You'll compare me
To a prophet for profit
Not merely
Putting words together for
Recreation
Each rhyme's a dissertation
You wanna know my occupation
I get paid to rock the nation
I go to work
I go to work
I go to work
