Marijuana vs. Alcohol

MrFisk says...

I interviewed the head of NORML a few years back for an op-ed I wrote. And while I was unable to use any of the information he provided at the time, he said that one of the first things Congress did was to exempt alcohol and tobacco from the Controlled Substances Act. Afterword, it didn't take much to vilify marijuana alongside heroin and LSD.

i think its a start and at least its on a major network and talked about, for once, by a "known" "medical professional" ... end quotes

but yea he could have gone one step further and contacted the people who know the truth, and encourage everyone to go to norml.org at the beginning and post the website on tv throughout show...

the price on the JWH chemical i preferred to cannabis has gone up 250% in the last few months. Now it is no longer an affordable alternative, but it sure is making money for people. Can't wait for votes in fall on legalizing in WA and OR... otherwise they will end up banning neurochemicals entirely, with the types of people writing these bills. Scary time to be ignorant, for sure... but that's not an excuse for what legislation is attempting to do.

There is no evidence use would go up with legalization and, yes I would like for use to increase. Cannabis is good for your body and mind.
Also from what I understand while alcohol is in use today it was much more of a problem during prohibition.

Ya, the "more use" argument is a faux argument. You can't make the same argument for, say, baked turkeys. "If we legalize baked turkeys consumption might go up!" The logical response to this is...so what. Even IF mary jane was harmful, we are allowed to harm ourselves in other ways, like not exercising or eating to many calories. This has everything to do with enforcing a moral direction, much like all social laws, be in welfare or gay marriage; someone trying to force his version of "good" into law.

sign a petition against republican representatives blocking hearings on HR 2306, the Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011

;;

HR 2306 was assigned to both the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The bill currently sits in legislative purgatory and how long it will stay there is entirely dependent on two men. The chairmen of these two committees have thus far refused to schedule the bill for a hearing. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), who chairs the Judiciary Committee, has made it clear he has no intentions of hearing the bill. Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), who chairs the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, has yet to take a strong public stance.

It's exciting that this is getting more and more support every year. We're not talking about the old pot heads from NORML that nobody ever listens to. These are major names! Respectable, professional, successful people!

It makes me very optimistic that changes are coming this decade. Maybe not all the changes that are needed, but I think we'll get a cannabis foothold within a few years, and that should start the ball rolling. I hope.
