Top Ten Creationist Arguments - Part 2

Sketch says...

Ha! I recently had to spread the love of your Context post in a gigantic Facebook thread when I quoted some biblical rule about how to properly treat female slaves. A giant passage (Exodus 21:7-11 NLT, to be exact) with clear as day instructions, and of course they came at me with the "out of context/it was a different time" argument. I always find it funny that they can somehow claim that it is the timeless, infallible word of God while also claiming that the nonsense in the Old Testament were man's rules and don't apply anymore. Or that somehow the omnipotent, omniscient creator of everything, who is all powerful and exists outside of time actually changed his damn mind about that crap.

Somewhat non sequitur, but I think is funny because I'm an argumentative, irritating, know-it-all douchebag, I also discovered Deuteronomy 23:1 recently. (ESV) "No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the Lord." Sorry, Lance Armstrong! I hope you enjoy your inspirational Tour de France wins in hell!

I'm sorry Edd.

Unfortunately, "ignorant" is all about not knowing the truth.

The truth is he has said many times that he writes that way because he doesn't care.

You're fucking ignorant, did you know that? Google 'dyslexia', will you?

But that's not the problem. Up until today I thought you were one of the coolest guys around here. Hell, I took regular trips to your queue and pqueue. But that image of you changed today. What happened? Did something push you over the edge? You seemed to be relatively calm before today.

Lance Armstrong Tells Off Reporter at Press Conference

lol yeah it's kinda hypocritical for saying 'we all should forgive', then go on to say 'i would never forgive you'.
But Lance is doing that to accentuate how offended he was by the guy's statement. No biggie.

This is exactly how I interpreted his statement. He's saying something after the fact of what he just said as an exception, to present how upset he is with the reporter.

I'm sure if he were to write it down on paper, he might take that part out in a revision, but giving an impromptu answer there's almost always going to be some type of fallacy existent in your words. It was an eloquent answer and seeks to remind me what a heroic personality Lance Armstrong is.

Opel P-1 - 376 Miles Per Gallon Car in 1973!

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

The Opel's rear axle was narrowed and super-hard low-friction tires were used.

Makes the car unfeasible to drive on wet roads, snow, ice, high heat, or any other real world driving conditions. The narrow rear axle and super-hard low-friction tires would have to be replaced with standard equipment to meet safety regulations. There goes the theoretical 'efficiency'...

To save even more weight, a chain drive was used.

Chain drives exchange the $4 bucks per fill-up in gasoline you save for about $2,000 a month in increased repair bills. They're also noisy and messy.

Now of course this isn't exactly a practical car. But even if you changed it enough to reduce its performance by 250 mpg, that still leaves you with 126 mpg!

Like far too many people, you are subscribing to a complete logical fallacy. You are assuming, "Well, if this thing gets 350 MPG, then even if we tweak it a LOT it would still get 150 MPG when we put it in the market." That assumption is patently false. If it was that simple then someone would be making a car right now TODAY that got over 1,000 MPG. These 'tech demo' and 'eco challenge' cars have no place in practical consumer markets for a reason. Most of what makes these fantasy-dream cars function is either illegal, impractical, or incredibly expensive.

For example - the wired blog link you supplied indicated that the record is over 10,000 miles per gallon. Following your logic, "Well SURELY we should be able to build a car with only one TENTH of that..." Well, yeah we probably could... However, it would cost about 10 million dollars to make and you'd only get 1,000 MPG when you use it exclusively on 1,000 mile long downhill racing tracks with no cargo, perfect weather, and with you pedalling like Lance Armstrong the entire time.

Let's not slam people with certain conditions who take it up as their cause. These people (Lance Armstrong, Christopher Reeves...) know intimately how it can affect a person's life. They meet hundreds or thousands of people suffering from similar conditions, and they know, intimately, how treatment or a cure would change these people's lives. They also often do lots and lots of research into treatments and possible cures for their own sake. When they come across one which only requires some funding, or a change in policy, they realize how much of an impact they as celebrities can have. They feel incredibly privileged to be in a position to be able to do something for all those people they know who are suffering and they step up as, hopefully, any of us would.

The cause chooses them, not the other way around.
