TV crew wait for someone to slip on the ice

However, it is British.
Would you refer to Chilean nationals as "American", simply because they reside in South America? You're very, very wrong.

But by all means, don't take my word for it. If you're ever in Ireland, please visit Cork and refer to the locals as "British". Please.

Also, this is not a 24hr news station, merely an excerpt from a 30 minute bi-nightly news programme.
>> ^dag:
How about Northern Ireland then- would we say that's British?

Yes, Dag, NI is within Great Britain. The Republic, however, gained independence in 1921 and severed all Commonwealth ties in 1949. The Republic of Ireland is in no way British.

There is an optical illusion that occurs when a person looks out to sea from the British coast whereby everything appears to be British. On a clear day the effect can carry beyond India

"The British Isles are a group of islands off the northwest coast of continental Europe that include Great Britain, Ireland and over six-thousand smaller islands.[7] There are two sovereign states located on the islands: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Ireland

The term British Isles is controversial in relation to Ireland,[7][11][12] where there are objections to its usage due to the association of the word "British" with Ireland. The Government of Ireland discourages its use,[13][14] and in relations with the United Kingdom the words "these islands" are used.[15][16] Although still used as a geographic term, the controversy means that alternative terms such as "Britain and Ireland" are increasingly preferred"

it is from wikipedia though, so it might be completely made up...

Um...what part of Britain is Dublin in exactly?
Might be an idea to change the British Tag before you get slapped by an Irish man.

It is not Great Britain, which consists of only England, Scotland and Wales. Nor is it part of the United Kingdom, which is Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Atheist Nations Are More Peaceful

jwray says...

"Spirituality" is an extremely vague concept that covers anything from belief in god to some completely non-supernatural philosophies. Loderr errs in assuming that 1. "spirituality" is mutually exclusive from belief in god (by simply adding the numbers) and 2. that "spirituality" necessarily contains a supernatural belief (or is mutually exclusive from atheism). The word has been abused so much that it is simply too vague to be useful for describing anything.

A better question is what percent of people believe in life after death. That's the main difference. Do you do right because it is right and make the most of your years, or simply follow the commands of a mythical character who may reward or punish you after death, and squander your years in expectation of infinitely more?

"I definitely believe in life after death":
USA - 55%
Norway - 31.6%
Great Britain - 26.5%
Netherlands - 26.7%

Ireland ≠ England

You're correct that Ireland is neither in, nor part of, England. However it's still part of the British Isles.

It can get a little confusing, but breaking it down as follows helps:

Great Britain consists of England, Scotland and Wales. (But neither Northern nor Southern Ireland.)

The United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. (Southern Ireland being an independent country called the Republic of Ireland, also known as Eire.)

The British Isles, however, are made up of the islands of Great Britain, Ireland and the several surrounding smaller islands.

So although Ireland is not part of Great Britain it is still part of the British Isles and therefore "British".

I'm not privileged and can't re-add this back into the * British channel, (Not to be confused with the English Channel with the tunnel going under it), so hopefully someone else will.

Why do videos like this get a "British" tag? If it were presented by an American woman it wouldn't get an "American" tag.

Because it's Manchester Airport, which is located inside the United Kingdom! That's where BRITISH people live! You know this because the United Kingdom is also known as Great Britain -> British people.
Get it?

You miss my point (or are you being sarcastic?)
If this video were shot in JFK airport, it wouldn't have an 'American' tag.

Real Time: New Rules - August 7th 2009

Lithic says...

Also found some more on my own, here's the Gallup poll apparently: http://www.gallup.com/poll/3742/new-poll-gauges-americans-general-knowledge-levels.aspx

One interesting part:

In the new poll, about four out of five Americans (79%) correctly respond that the earth revolves around the sun, while 18% say it is the other way around. These results are comparable to those found in Germany when a similar question was asked there in 1996; in response to that poll, 74% of Germans gave the correct answer, while 16% thought the sun revolved around the earth, and 10% said they didn't know. When the question was asked in Great Britain that same year, 67% answered correctly, 19% answered incorrectly, and 14% didn't know.

Seems once again I just expect way too much of humanity. Guess the good news is I can go back to thinking Americans are just more or less as stupid as everyone else.

>> ^alizarin:
>> The only thing he said that was debatable was that he said "steal" and "always"... and he used those words on the fly to try to convince a Canadian of his point when asked a mildly hostile question. Other than his choice of words we are a culture known for being a melting pot of cultures and ideas. Most of the American achievements you mentioned either weren't or were partly internationally developed.

When someone says things like "steal" and "always" they have very specific meanings. This wasn't a Freudian slip, alizarin. He chose those words carefully. And who cares whether he chose them on the fly or not? That's just obfuscation. I'm sure some murders are done without malice aforethought and done so "on the fly"; doesn't make them less wrong.

And I'm not arguing this isn't a melting pot. I fail to see the point. Multiple groups of people who assimilated in the US developed those inventions I listed. I know Great Britain's industrialism helped carve out America's industrialism, but does that mean we should give Queen Elizabeth credit for inventing the Cotton Gin?

Compulsory Healthcare (Politics Talk Post)

Let 'mrica stay beautiful and be the only country in the western world without universal healthcare. That way only the people who can afford health insurance will get the medical care they need. People who can't afford it doesn't deserve decent healthcare cuz they're losers.

The British Nazi Party

dannym3141 says...

Excellent gorillaman.

The first post on this page is outrageous, i can barely stomach the whole thing. Comparing ideals which exclude people on the basis of their skin to the suffragette movement?

So you think excluding people based on their race/colour/creed is comparable to NOT EXCLUDING PEOPLE BASED ON THEIR RACE/COLOUR/CREED (gender) !?!?!??!?!?!?

The BNP have specifically preyed on people in areas who are subject to racial differences and problems. They have thinly veiled their racist and neo-nazi policies behind a virtually transparent curtain of patriotism.

It's sick and disgusting that great britain - a country we once were proud to say that our empire, for a time, stood ALONE against a rising tide of opression which threatened the world - has become a country in which neo-nazi high-rankers (literally, one quit his neo nazi group to take a position at the BNP) can get into a position of vocal power.

Welcome to germany in the 1930's. A rising popularity grows for a party which claims that <x> are the source of your problems, we can do better without <x>. This time, we have history to look back on and realise - QUICKLY - the road we're going down.

The people who voted for the BNP are unreservedly stupid. a) for not realising these thinly veiled racist policies, and b) for not realising that their vote is going to a party of people AS STUPID AS THEY ARE.

The BNP recently made a poster saying "BRITISH PEOPLE FOR BRITISH JOBS!" - featuring a picture of 3 white AMERICANS stood in front of a union jack patting each other on the back. There's a reason not to vote for them. At least our more popular parties would have been crafty and devious enough to not do something so stupid!

Pprt - in one very small sentence, you hit on the truth - that our lazy, careless, empire building MPs in the popular parties do not realise that the backhanded, underhanded, sneaky and elusive tactics they use for governing are hurting us and them in the long run. Or worse, they probably know it and DON'T CARE. They're in it for themselves, not us. But that is NO excuse for letting racists into our government.

Monty Python - Fish License

rasch187 says...

^ In Great Britain dog licensing was abolished in 1987. Prior to this, dog licences were mandatory, but the requirement was widely ignored, with only about half of owners having one. The final rate for a dog licence was 37 pence. This fee was reduced from 37½p when the halfpenny was withdrawn in 1984. This odd figure was itself a conversion from 7/6 (seven shillings and sixpence) on decimalisation in 1971. The revenue went to local authorities. (wiki)
