10 Worst Foods in Nutritional Value

jimnms says...

She is wrong about catfish. Sure, wild catfish that you catch in a river may be bad for you (and probably taste like crap), but catfish that you buy in a grocery store and eat at restaurants are farm raised, high in protein and when not fried are not bad for you.

10 Worst Foods in Nutritional Value

The only real interesting, non-obvious food she lists is canned soup - and her main complaint is with sodium. While sodium (or nitrates, which she mentions later) may be problems for some people, they're hardly the dietary concern most people should be focusing on (which is, for most people, macro-nutrient balance). That being the case, I'd say that soup is probably a better choice (again, for most people) than the likely lunchtime replacements: bagels, most sandwiches, or rice, pasta, or potato dishes.

If someone is worried about sodium, get a low sodium soup (of which there are plenty) - at least with a soup you're getting some nutritional variety. I'd also differ with her on fried catfish. Sure it's not perfect, but again it's at least some nutritional variety and has some balance in macro-nutrients (most people could use more protein/less carbs).

commentary and corrections:
nitrite-cancer link: Still controversial. The American Cancer Society recommends reducing consumption of nitrite-preserved foods.

10. Catfish -- http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~frf/sea-mehg.html
average 0.049 ppm of mercury according to the FDA - not the worst, but not as good as salmon or almost any other freshwater fish.

9. Canned Soups typically have about 50% of the RDA of sodium per 120 calories, and that RDA is based on a 2000 calorie diet. I.E., to meet the sodium RDA, canned soup would have to be a tiny percentage of your overall caloric intake. MSG serves a dual function as a flavor enhancer and preservative, but it's not really bad for you in moderate quantities

8. Bacon: There's a little bit of protein and cholesterol with the fat and salt. Of course it's still bad for you.

7. Fast food burgers...

6. Twinkies have almost no vitamins, minerals, or protein... They're mostly fat, starch, and sugar.

5. Chips ... she exaggerates.

Its fun to trick animals (generally the technique is to get huge catfish to try to swallow you're hand, then drag them out of their home).

I always thought it was cool because you don't often think that a 60lb fish is just a few feet away hanging out under a ledge, then some guy drags out a beast with a head the size of your shoulders.
