Sleepy Sleepy Otters Holding Hands

plastiquemonkey says...

...more about the white otter (the even sleepier one), named Nyac:

Nyac has a long tale
By MATT KIELTYKA, 24 HOURS

The Vancouver Aquarium's eldest sea otter may seem no different from its furry companions, but Nyac has one amazing tale.

That's because she's one of the last remaining survivors of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska 18 years ago.

As many as 5,000 otters were killed in the 1989 spill, but Nyac - then a six-month old pup - was saved by a group of veterinarians and taken to the Vancouver Aquarium for rehabilitation.

"It's amazing, so many other otters died right off the bat," said Dr. Marty Haulena, Nyac's vet for the past year. "She showed us otters could be rehabilitated."

Senior marine mammal scientist Dr. Lance Barrett-Lennard, who saw the aftermath of the Prince William Sound spill firsthand, told 24 hours that oil-covered otters die within mere hours if not treated.

That's because the oil clumps together their thick fur and allows water to contact skin, exposing otters to hypothermia.

Long-term complications such as liver disease and a depleted food supply have also heavily hit the otter population at the Sound.

Nyac survived all of that, however, and is now one of the oldest known otters in captivity and has successfully given birth to three pups.

Aquarium staff will be using this week to remember the 18th anniversary of the oil spill and teach visitors about the lasting effects on the environment, with Nyac taking centre stage.

Pink Floyd - Time - Live from P*U*L*S*E

silvercord says...

P*U*L*S*E (also referred to as Pulse) is a live double CD by Pink Floyd, released in 1995.

The album was recorded during the band's Division Bell tour in 1994, specifically the UK and European leg, which ran from July to October 1994 (See Pink Floyd live performances).

The album includes a complete live version of The Dark Side of the Moon and features a booklet with many photos from performances on this tour. It also features "Astronomy Domine," a Syd Barrett song not performed since the early 1970s, as a tribute to the original Floyd guitarist.

Unlike Delicate Sound of Thunder, David Gilmour and producer James Guthrie have stated that no parts of the songs were re-recorded in the studio. However, the band and Guthrie fixed songs that had bad notes (as heard on some bootlegs) by lifting solos and corrected vocal lines from other performances as the band recorded most of the European leg.

In the U.S., P*U*L*S*E debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in June 1995 (briefly dethroning Hootie and the Blowfish's Cracked Rear View for a week before Hootie regained the #1 spot in the US) and was soon certified Double Platinum on July 31, 1995. The album has, to date, sold over sixteen million copies in the US and was certified 8 times Multi-Platinum in the US on July 31, 2006 by the R.I.A.A..

Well, Dag, it seems you get a lot of comments in response to your comments.

So, here's another.
Your comment,
"Allow me to chime in. As much as I dislike W, Rummy, Dick and the rest, I can't believe they are evil enough to plot something like this against their own people."
from this submission.

I'm not trying to argue any side of that particular argument, I was just wondering if you were familiar with Operation Northwoods?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwoods

Because that sort of shows that a presidential administration will totally do horrible crap to their own people. I mean, that was the Kennedy administration for crying out loud. Surely the Bush gang is more evil than JFK's group.

I just think this shows that's it's not beyond a reasonable doubt that they would do something like this.

9/11: Kevin Barrett outfoxes Hannity & Colmes

skeptical says...

While I'm all for a healthy mistrust of any government. This 911 conspiracy stuff is just getting ridiculous. It seems to be more motivated by hate for Republicans in general (and Bush in particular) than it is any sort of reasoned analysis.

theo47 is correct that Republicans paint "liberals" with a broad brush, but then Democrats do exactly the same with Republicans as well. Both sides refer far to much to name calling and scare tactics.

As to joedirt's comments... a jet plane was flow into each of the buildings & it was caught on film by several cameras! Of course the buildings would have collapsed! A detailed analysis would takes several years (if not a decade or two). As for bad welds, or learning from mistakes...how would you suggest building such a structure to survive a direct hit from a jetliner (other than building it underground)? The structural analysis wasn't considered that important because...
1) Both building suffered severe damage to their structures.
2) The steel in the girders loses much of it's strength at temperatures well within the burn temperature of jet fuel.
Any engineer or architect would already know those facts.

As to the claims that thermite residue was found on the girders...
1) It's unnecessary to invoke demolition to explain the collapse
2) One person can claim anything especially if they have an ideological axe to grind
(get back to me when it's been verified by multiple independent sources).
3) A benefit of talking about thermite is that most people don't know what it is (answer: powdered Aluminium & Iron Oxide).

Let's see now...what was the jet made mostly out of? (answer: Aluminium)
What was the building girders made of? (answer: Steel, which happens to be mostly Iron). So, I'm not very surprised that someone can claim that he found Thermite traces, proving it is a very different matter.

As far as Barrett goes...trying to claim that all of those other terrorist actions were all orchestrated (and with out any major leaks) comes off as being rather implausible. Sort of like the Lunar Landing conspiracy crank claims about all of the launches & landings being faked without anyone being caught. Both sides just ended up resorting to name calling...hardley informative (but not unexpected).

9/11: Kevin Barrett outfoxes Hannity & Colmes

quantumushroom says...

The guys on the left side of the screen know that Western Civilization is in a war of survival with islamofascist savages. The 1982-looking doof (ironically) on the right side of the screen doesn't understand that in any islamofascist-run country he'd be gladly beheaded for no greater crime than being a Westerner. Barrett's a descendant of a tradition of fools going back at least as far as the 1940s, when his crackpot forefathers claimed FDR knew about the imminent attack on Pearl Harbor "but let it happen anyway" so America would be drawn into WW2.

9/11: Kevin Barrett outfoxes Hannity & Colmes

oohahh says...

YouTube comments: Kevin Barrett talks about 9/11 being an inside job and does an excellent job mopping up the floor with a very uppity and pompous Sean Hannity. The best Hannity can do is personal attacks and name calling, while Barrett actually has facts.

Pink Floyd- Look of the Week

therealblankman says...

The music is great, but the real treat is the interviewer Hans Keller. His comments at the beginning are very revealing of his outlook, and the interview at 5:50 is great. Who turned out to be right? Well, have you ever heard of Hans Keller before today? Oh, and this is one of the very few films which exist of Floyd with Syd Barrett performing.
