WWII Bomb Detonated in Munich, Germany

Yogi says...

Jesus that was fucking loud. Just imagine being in Germany when the bombs fell one after another after another. If you survived you'd walk out to a horrible moonscape of destruction. Imagine the town your live in being utterly destroyed in a horrifying onslaught of military might. It's just awful, we really need to make sure we never have another world war, and get rid of our damn nuclear weapons!

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Trailer

longde says...

In the very first episode of Transformers (so many years ago), it was shown (http://youtu.be/g2ZUZEixOx0) that when they crash landed on Earth, all the robots suffered great damage. To repair them, the AI on their starships used the only templates available, which were the vehicles and devices of the humans of earth.

I always found transformers kind of weird. Why on this foreign planet do robots transform into cars or planes when there are no people? Why do they become the likeness of the extinct ancestors of birds from another world?

Yay the Charleston!

The awesome thing is, these people are completely in another world right now. The scary thing is that when they are all dancing together, they're clearly still in their own worlds. Looks great as solo, but in a group it's mostly frantic and dangerous looking.

The Thing prequel (2011) trailer

Upvoting just so we can continue to discuss just how bad this is on so many levels.
1. CG
2. The Norwegians are suddenly not so norweegie
3. Had to add a woman
4. McReady > all the people in this cast
5. CG
All that said, I do have one devil's advocate moment: the Thing itself was a remake, so maybe I'll give this flick a chance. There were a few things that made me kind of interesting: the look of the camp was pretty consistent, as was the block form which they got the thing... I'll give it a whirl, but I'm going in with low expectations.

True The Thing was a remake of The Thing from Another World. The only difference here is that it was a remake. This is supposed to be a prequel and it looks like the same dam movie. They even try to make it bigger and better. The ship they find is massive and way down in a ice cave. The 82 movie it was big and near the surface with the body found near it.

.. and also both 'The Thing' and 'Thing from another world' are both based on on sci-fi Novella titled "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell.

I'll give this prequel a chance, but i'm concerned as others are, about the use of CG.

US Plutocracy - Rep. Gohmert: End All Corporate Taxes

Yogi says...

>> ^gwiz665:

Corporations go where the money is.

Which means like other 3rd world countries we should work to end taxes completely so that they can come and rape us with the lowest wages imaginable. That's how 3rd world countries get contracts by beating down their people and making sure that they have a complete handle on them so they'll make shoes for a cent an hour.

Basically it means that there's another World Senate of corporations that have Veto power on all governmental policies regardless if the people want them or not. Democracy is there enemy and they'll hurt the countries that don't fall in line. We have to stop them or humanity will continue to suffer until the end.

Of Mosques and Men: Reflections on the Ground Zero Mosque

rougy says...

The Ground Zero Mosque is just a bunch of horse-shit.

Certain powers in America are trying their damnedest to stir this up to a holy war.

They'll succeed of course partly due to the stupidity of the average American and to a large part because our media is...compromised, to put it nicely.

I was really hoping I could live my life worrying about nothing more than my next tag of pussy and how hard my dick would stay...but it ain't gonna happen.

Some evil fuckers are finagling us into another World War.

And I wish somebody would do something about it.

I actually find the notion of saving our species to be a vain and misguided effort. In 100 million billion trillion years when the Universe is still here, We wont be. If we survive long enough we will evolve from Homo Sapien to something else.
Of course. So what? Humans have children, even though those children are not clones of their parents. Why should we care that somewhere far down the line our offspring will speciate into something else? They will still be Homo in some way. /rebuilder

Aye, Homo is the way of the future :-D
But in all seriousness it means that we can't save our species. That's all.

Well, that applies whether we leave the planet or not. Semantic quibbles are the least of our challenges in colonizing another world.

I recently read some interesting stuff (i.e. nerd porn) relating to this here on Pharyngula. Just a smattering (the comments section mainly) of the very real obstacles preventing us from achieving this dream not likely until the far distant future. Also some interesting speculation on the idea that genetically modifying ourselves to be able to thrive on otherwise inhospitable planets being the more important/crucial barrier than our rocket/space propulsion technology.

I'm typically an optimist on this subject (damn you Carl Sagan!) but also a realist.
