Aisha Tyler floors Ann Coulter!

Aisha Tyler floors Ann Coulter!

alizarin says...

That's not ignorance, she calculates her lies and deflections. She's parlayed it into a career.

Coulter's ignorance is astounding, but the fact that people continue to give that ignorance a platform is mind-blowing.

LittleBigPlanet delayed after Qur’an blunder (Religion Talk Post)

imstellar28 says...

fyi, Muhammad as a historical figure was a murderer and pillager, raped women, and had over a dozen wives including a 6 year old girl (Aisha bint abi Bakr in 623 AD), was a hypocrite and didn't follow any of the rules he laid upon others of the Islamic faith.

Another issue I want to raise to your attention: I've seen lots of preachers out here that come to the campus and insult every religion, race, gender, of any age by labeling them as sinners. Their disrespect and arrogance in 'saving' everyone from themselves is their argument in general. But more so for Muslims in the audience, their argument is this simple assertion: that Mohammed is a pedophile (referring to the consumation of marriage with Aisha when she was nine years old) and such a standard of morality cannot serve as a timeless role model of ethics/morality for future generations. As such, the teachings of Mohammed cannot be trusted and as a result the religion of Islam is not credible.

What is your take on this?

There has got to be more than this "that it was ok at the time, lots of people were doing it at the time" etc.... the prophet's behavior is supposed to be of pristine character that can be emulated in ALL societies, past and present.

Another great post!

Thee argument over the Burka and the veil (niqab) comes down to different translations of the Qur'an and hadith.

For example, in Qur'an 33:59, the key word is جُيُوبِهِن (juyubihinna). This word is translated inccorectly by supporters of the veil as 'face'. In fact, the word derives from an Arabic root which means neck or collarbone. Similarly, the word 'face' does not appear in the oft-cited hadith about Aisha (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60: 282). Wrongly translated the verse says that the women covered their faces when Qur'an verse 33:59 was revealed. The word which is mistranslated is 'fakhtamarnabiha' - which is derived from the word خمار (khimar). A khimar was a veil used to cover the neck and the top of the head.

How do we know it wasn't used to cover the face? In another important hadith narrated by Aisha (Abu Dawood, Book 2: 0641) we read that Muhammad said "Allah does not accept prayer of a woman who has reached puberty unless she wears a khimar." It is well accepted by all Muslims that women are not allowed to cover their faces when they pray so the khimar can not be a veil used to cover the face.
