Captain Sisko has a full sensory vision of himself as an under-appreciated science fiction magazine writer in 1950s America. The following desciption is taken from "Memory Alpha", some wiki site dedicated to all things Star Trek:
"Far Beyond the Stars" was a science fiction story written by Benny Russell. The story featured a poor colored man dreaming about a space station in the distant future with an African-American captain.
The story was based on a drawing by Roy Ritterhouse, and the poor man dreaming of the future concept came from a suggestion made by Albert Macklin.
After the change suggested by Macklin was made, the story was printed in the September 1953 issue of Incredible Tales magazine but the issue was pulped before it hit the newsstands.
