Look at the space stuff as the environment to try random ideas out, like a lot of old think tank stuff had side experiments and things going on that ended up turning into something or eliminating possibilities in bigger projects.

If they only did what they planned...half the people wouldn't be interested in going in the first place. Since if you know what's going to happen, what's the point of going into the unknown.
