U.S. Congressman, sworn in on the Qur'an (not the Bible)

Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, the first Muslim to be elected to the U.S. Congress, garnered lots of attention after he announced he wanted to use the Qur'an when sworn into office.
The video notes, while he is the first Muslim elected to U.S. office, he is not the first congressman to request something other than the Bible for the ceremony...

Ellison chose to use the Jefferson Qur'an, because "It demonstrates that from the very beginning of our country, we had people who were visionary, who were religiously tolerant, who believed that knowledge and wisdom could be gleaned from any number of sources, including the Quran. A visionary like Thomas Jefferson was not afraid of a different belief system."

More on this here

I must say I can't believe that this was controversial - but then every country has its fair share of small-minded intolerant bigots.

Yes, it seems the talking heads with their own shows/agendas thrive on controversy, and will say anything to get attention.
And thanks for the additional info guys.

Why in a modern society should you have to swear by a religious book? Maybe if politicians had to swear by a human rights bill things would be different.

The Koran as presently interpreted is incompatible with the Constitution. You've already got Muslim cab drivers in Minnesota (surprise) refusing to pick up people carrying or imbibing alcohol and a few at Target now refusing to ring up pork products.

It's embarrassing minority-tyranny by people with Dark Ages beliefs. Why pretend the civilization that put men on the moon is only "equal" to those that won't let women drive and can't get the oil out of the ground without Western tech?

As for Ellison, he's the one that made this a media circus, not Prager. What you've got on your hands, Minnesota, is another elected communist who will have an undistinguished record, outside of parroting victimhood.

No vote because, who cares?

QM again proves himself to be a racist, bigot with xenophobic feelings towards any other race.

What you just typed was utter fucking bullshit.

Seriously you offer commentary only where your god Rush Limbaugh has a radio by line you can quote him on. But when it's something real you never even look at it, pathetic honestly.

Anyone who still uses the word "communist" with a straight face is clearly a nutjob, and I think QM knows he's nuts.

If it's not OK for cab drivers to choose who and who they will not pick up (at the peril of losing money), how is it OK for golf clubs to discriminate about their memberships?

The answer: Farhad's correct about QM being a bigot and a racist. Aren't we all proud to have him here at VS?

All of the fuss over religious texts is just jaw-droppingly silly. Swear the guy in on a box of cornflakes for all it matters.

QM: That the Qur'an as presently interpreted is incompatible with the Constitution is debatable, and frankly, I couldn't argue well one way or the other as I just don't know enough about either. However, the same constitution that you hold in such high regard does state that people are free to swear on whatever book they please (or not, for that matter).

That would make your world-view "incompatible with the constitution"....which is actually pretty funny.

" You've already got Muslim cab drivers in Minnesota (surprise) refusing to pick up people carrying or imbibing alcohol "

Many white British cab drivers in my city also refuse to pick up "people carrying or imbibing alcohol"... because they don't want puke on their car seats.
They often drive past people with fish&chips/burgers too... it's discrimination I tell you
