That's 14, Rich, not 7. 7 pairs, and it seems to imply 2 pairs of the unclean animals, not the 1 pair that I'd thought was the case before I saw this. That makes slightly more sense in terms of reducing inbreeding but given Biblical views on evolution (and homosexuality, which would also muck up the 1 pair plan), I'm not sure this applies.

Looking at the numerous translations, there all combinations of 7 clean animals / 7 pairs, and 2 unclean animals / 2 pairs.
