MPACUK - Involving Young Muslims in the Democratic Process

The Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK aims to involve young British muslims in the democratic political process. They have taken a strong stance against extremism - regularly denouncing extremist organisation when more established Islamic organisations and community leaders remained silent. They aim to challenge the anti-Islamic and pro-Israel bias in the media, and to hold British politicians and Muslim leaders/organisations to account for their words and actions.

Since the role of Imams is mentioned, is he speaking exclusively, or even largely, of Shia Muslims? If so, since Sunni make up the largest proportion of Muslims in the world, is it the same in Britain, or does it even matter?

Fletch

You're confusing the role of an imam, with the doctrine of imamship. An imam leads prayer in a mosque for both Sunni and Shi'a Muslims. But only the Shi'a believe in the doctrine of imamship (imamiyyah) - that after Muhammad God appointed specific infallible leaders - the imams - to lead and guide mankind. The largest school of Shi'a Islam - the twelvers (اثنا عشرية) Ithnā ˤashariyyah - recognise 12 Imams.
