Hare Krishna - a short documentary.

Ruminating over a bottle of vodka on Saturday night, a friend and I were discussing a particular stoner/dj acquaintance and the fact that I turned my back for 5 minutes, only to find he had joined the Krishna crew. We then realised that the only Hare's we ever seem to come across are seemingly in the 20-35 age bracket - which begged the question: Is it just a phase?! I decided to go looking for answers. I didn't exactly find any, but I did find this interesting wee doco about a British lad turned Hare after he saw his friends looking stupid on drugs. Which made me wonder - was I in some small way responsible for my friend/acquaintance turning to the Krishna faith?...hmmmm.

The Krishnas seem pretty high on the derangment scale. Probably about an 8 I'd say. One notch below the strict Jainists that wear gauze over thier mouths to avoid breathing in (and killing) bugs.

When I was 15, I spent a long evening trying to talk a friend out of joining the Hare Kirshnas the next day and failed. I'm 47 now, and a few years back he looked me up to thank me for trying. He had given his inheritance to them, which had supported the local group for a while, but eventually it ran out and the members had to take regular jobs and give the money to the group. Eventually he came to the realization that he was wasting his life, and could work at a dead-end job and not have to share a bedroom with a bunch of other guys.
