Gaydar: fact or fiction?

From 60 Minutes. Most people are able to guess an individual's sexual orientation with a surprising degree of accuracy by observing his/her mannerisms, speech patterns and general masculinity or femininity, even when the individual in question is at a very young age.

To what extent this is a result of genetics or in vitro environmental effects, and to what extent it's a result of social environment, is a very open question. It's unfortunate that the video doesn't point this out.

Not very surprising. Many gays look and act like the rest of the straight population, so it's difficult to tell with them. But many others mimic the stereotypical aspects of the opposite sex, which is a pretty strong indicator of homosexuality. Not always, but for the most part.

I don't see how that's unfortunate. The video wasn't about trying to determine the cause of homosexuality, only if it's possible to detect it based on body language and speech.

I watched a kid on a bus once that was reading something he was really in to and when his stop came he put his book down, put on his gay face and walked out. His whole face and mannerisms turned gay right before my eyes.

The video quotes the researchers' making statements like "this may show feminizing of the brain in gay men, and masculinizing of the brain in gay women." That usually implies something chemical or hereditary, rather than mere socialization, something along the lines of the hypothesis that men are more likely to be gay if exposed to an excess of androgens in the womb.

The kind of phrasing used by the doctors is a bit misleading if not balanced by making it explicit and recognizing the other side in the controversy.

Actually, it would be the other way around. Androgens are male sex hormones - an excess of them would not lead to homosexuality. Research shows that women produce less testosterone [less androgens] with each male child, so statistically, you are more likely to be gay if you have several older brothers.

Gay men also do have a very notable brain difference. Simon LeVay is a neuroanatomist, and has found in his research (doing autopsies on both straight and gay males who had AIDS) that there is a cluster of cells in the anterior hypothalamus that is smaller in gay men.

Of course both nature and nurture play a part. It's not just "mere socialization." If that was the case, all children of gay couples would be gay.

LittleRed, testosterone is not the only androgen. Men with several older brothers--both gay and straight--tend to have a smaller ratio of the length of the index to the ring finger, which is a very strong sign of increased fetal exposure to androgens.
