Coil - At the Heart of it All (1984)

Wow, this definitely brings back some memories from high school. To me, this is the sound of existential angst.

In the 90s, CKDU-FM in Halifax used to play music like this, layered over the glurpy soundscape ambient textures of artists like Robert Rich and Steve Roach. In particular a show called Delerium introduced me to this kind of sound, (called by some Isolation or Isolationist Ambient) which was originally pioneered by bands like Coil, Nurse With Wound and Throbbing Gristle in the 80s, and then taken up in the early to mid 90s by bands like Deutsch Nepal, Amplified Tones and even some Aphex Twin stuff.
