Why is there such raving fervor to call games art? Isn't it enough for them to be games, or do they have to be something more highbrow for your time spent on them to be justified?

Isn't there some middleground to be reached here? Let's say that there's art within games, but that a game by itself isn't necessarily art. That should satisfy the ego and pretentiousness of both sides, no?
