The things we do to attract the ladies......
Woodpecker made a wise acoustical choice!
Actually it's not a mistake but it's easy to think it is. They try to make interesting noises to attract mates, and often find that metal makes a GREAT loud noise. We have at least 2 in our neighborhood that do this on metal mounted on electric poles, and it can be heard for way farther than when they peck my trees. They obviously do it on purpose.
"Stun Cuffs" The New Shock Collar For The Sheeple
Do they make these "stun cuffs" smaller? Like the size of my "woody woodpecker?"

Woman pulls porcupine quills from raven's face
Their size is reminiscent of magpies or giant woodpeckers, it's a big-ass bird!
Never realized how big a raven is -- much more used to the local crows around here.
Friendly Korean Checks to See if Owl is Still Alive
Poor thing.
Where I grew up we used to have sparrows and woodpeckers fly into the glass doors of our house, knocking themselves out like this. My mother would always go outside and sit, holding them in the palms of her hands to keep them warm until they came to. They'd usually wake up really dazed and it would take a few minutes for them to get a clear enough head to fly off, but it was a nicer way of bringing them about than tapping them on the chest while leering over them with a cell camera. Hehe.
Incompetent ATF Agent Confiscates 30 Airsoft Guns
Those little yellow airsoft bb's hurt more irritatingly than those paint balls do, and they leave teensy bruises (more-so on gals) that look as if you had fallen asleep and woke up to find that you'd been attacked by woodpeckers.

Mac & Moe Playing The Keyboard
All they need is a Mynah Bird for vocals and a Woodpecker to jam the beats and they've got a fine feathered band by cracky!
Ornithology. Casuals, casuals everywhere. (Blog Entry by UsesProzac)
They know when you are talking about them!

It's like this talk about blue jays cursed me! Today the jays are out in force and they've commandeered all three feeding areas. When I first noticed the unusual activity, I thought I saw a new blue woodpecker because it was hopping around the tree and pecking like one, but when it came around, it was a blue jay, eating all the woodpecker suet I'd shoved into knotholes around the tree.
They are currently dive bombing the cardinals on the feeders they are too big to perch on. I put out special feed just for the jays and they've been decent all through winter until now!!
