Robot movies seem to always be about them becoming aware, self-concious, or alive... I know Asimov had a great influence on this trend but still, is the lemon not pressed enough? Star Trek (Data),Bladerunner, Robocop, Wall-E, Alien(s), A.I., Stepford Wives, D.A.R.Y.L., and personal favorite : Short circuit. And now this one. All the same re-invention of the Pinocchio archetype, if one may say.

Tracey Spicer on society's expectations of women

Trancecoach jokingly says...

It's a good thing that there are no concomitant expectations placed on men whatsoever with regards to their net worth, their financial independence, their capacities to support a family on their own without actually spending any time with their children or their wives and other relatives, their general athleticism, their own type of attractiveness -- their height, their weight -- their general aggressiveness, their machismo, their sensitivity, their emotionality, their stoicism, their bravery, their intelligence, their capacities to fix or build everything and anything, their overall dominance over others and themselves...

Plus, as a woman, she absolutely has no choice whatsoever in whether or not she participates in any of the social standards that she references here (or reinforces by her very appearance regardless of what she wears or puts on!)..

It's all imposed on her, and she has no say in the matter at all.. Good thing she's a victim and we men are here to protect and take care of her.

Republicans vs. Democrats: Why So Angry? with Robert Reich

VoodooV says...

I think it's also just that we're in the midst of great technological and sociological change.and it's due to the internet mostly.

if you lived in a small conservative town pre-internet, It was far more likely that you'd either never say anything, or succumb to peer pressure when it comes to voicing any dissent. Any views of alternative thinking always came from someone outside that town, so it was easier to dismiss or ignore. But when the internet puts you in touch with everyone else on the planet and it's far harder to deny thinking that runs contrary to how you think or at the very least, harder to drown it out.

We're also on the verge of some huge changes like medical technology getting better and better. Instead of relying "old wives tales" to cure what ails you. We're on the verge of massive transportation changes...the slow death of the internal combustion engine, we're not that far away from cars that will drive themselves. We also have to think more about the environment.

It's a time of HUGE change, and the people who are in power don't always like change. Even people who are not in power can often get distraught and upset at change.

Are you SYRIAs? (User Poll by albrite30)

blankfist says...

The right answer is noninterventionism, in my opinion. And sanctions aren't diplomatic solutions. They are acts of war on a sovereign country, which usually results in starving its people, which creates resentment.

Here's some reasons why noninterventionism is so important. First, bombing campaigns usually create collateral damage, and the funny thing about people, they tend to hate you when you kill their moms or sons or wives or friends. For reference, please refer to 9/11 in the U.S.

Secondly, Syria is having a civil war. How'd the U.S. like it if Britain supported the Confederacy during its civil war?

Thirdly, supporting the rebels is essentially being al-Qaeda's air force. Yeah, remember those guys? The guys who flew planes into our buildings? I don't think we should support them.

Fourth, our sudden pious indignation is misplaced, and worse, selective. I didn't hear one person in the U.S. calling to bomb Israel when they used white phosphorous on Palestinian women and children.

Fifth, you know exactly what is really fueling the march into Syria. It's not a humanitarian intervention, it's about oil. Syria doesn't want to trade their oil in U.S. dollars. Neither does Iran. If we allow the U.S. to bomb Syria, we will soon be marching into Tehran.

Sixth, who made us world police?

Lastly, it's not like we couldn't be spending that money at home fixing our infrastructure and taking care of our people. I think feeding the homeless here is way more important than making people homeless in other countries from bomb campaigns.

or the thrill of an 11 year old's first deer kill: http://youtu.be/95rf5w_k_-E

my father was in vietnam and taught me to hunt, and I'm passing it onto my kids who also love to hunt.

I taught my wife to frog gig, we go out during full moon in a jon boat, I shine spotlight, while she gigs.

Also rabbit hunting on full moon with spotlight is good, course there are old wives tales about hunting rabbit on full moon or the meat will be bad

I don't see what's hard to understand about the fun and thrill of the hunt. watch any hunting, fishing videos and listen to the "hoots and hollers" of excitement.

I need to get myself a rifle! Fuck the forest creatures. Who would rather see them frolicking and gliding merrily through the forest than laying in bbq sauced pieces on their dinner plates anyway? Who gives a shit about the furry babies and the young birds that are left behind to fend for themselves and that will likely die because their Mothers didn't make it home? They're only animals.

I'm curious. Are you by any chance in the military and would you feel the same sort of rush from shooting a person?

Saudi Instructional Video - How wives should be disciplined

shatterdrose says...

Sadly, though, he does make a point. Us "Westerners" are just as guilty as they are for beating their wives. Now, the question is, why? Is it religion? Or is it a deep seated cultural thing (which may have deep roots in religion) that causes such behaviour.

25 Accidental Inventions That Changed The World

bareboards2 says...

When I was in elementary school, science class included making fun of "old wives tales" as emblematic of superstition.

There was an "old wives tale" that moldy bread could cure a fever.

If only those early scientists had been more curious and less dismissive, we might have had penicillin much much sooner.

Of course, then we would have had penicillin resistant bugs much sooner, too...
