What dag heard when the iPad was announced

EmptyFriend says...

>> ^dag:
OK sure- let's hate on Apple some more.
I remember when I was in sixth grade- it was really cool to hate the band Kiss. "Kiss Sucks" was scrawled all over the the wooden jungle gyms, on Pee-chees, carved into desks etc etc. I realized then, that their "Kiss hating" was more about social adjustment than actual dislike of the music.
Likewise, the blind hatred for Apple as a company, while very trendy I know, doesn't really make you any cooler in the eyes of your peers.
There, I said it. That feels better.

but doesn't this imply that everyone hating on apple knows nothing about the company/products? my wife has been using apple products for a long time (currently MBP and iphone 3GS) so i too have used them pretty regularly. i think they're fine products, so i wouldn't say i "hate" the products or the company, but i'm certainly not a big fan.

this video isn't really hating on apple, or the iPad, just the superlative filled announcement.

anyways, the iPad just seems exceptionally silly to me. if they get the speculated webcam on there then it's slightly better, but i really can't see a need for it (and neither does my wife).

People who Appreciate a Good User Experience Will Like the iPad (Blog Entry by dag)

RedSky says...

They won't miss these added features because those primarily exposed to Apple's mass marketed products won't expect them by default. If Apple can define tablet PC to lack or not require GPS, a camera, possibly even Flash then that will define their expectations. I'm sure more are and will remain oblivious to the likes of the Archos 5G/9 which is superior to the iPad and does everything it should:

Archos 9 - $600
1.76 lbs.
1.1Ghz ATOM Z510. Runs Windows 7.
8.9", 1024 x 600 pixels resistive, LED backlight.
10.08" x 5.28" x 0.67" thick
7.4v Lithium-Polymer battery, 5 hours, removeable. 36W (12v @ 3a) power adapter.
HDD 60GB (1.8")
WiFi (802,11b/g), Bluetooth 2.0 (EDR)
Microphone.
Stereo Speakers.
Headphone jack.
1.3mp Webcam,
Optical trackpoint mouse,L/R mouse buttons.
Built-in Stand, 2-positions.
USB port.
Lotus Symphony included: Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations.

iPad - Starting at $500, but $700 for that amount of hard drive space.
1.5 lbs.
1Ghz A4. Runs iPad OS 3.2.
9.7", 1024 x 768 pixels, capacitive, LED backlight, IPS, Oleophobic
9.56" x 7.47" x 0.5" thick.
25Whr Lithium-Polymer battery, 10 hours, fixed. 10W (5v @ 2a) power adapter.
16GB, 32GB, or 64GB flash memory.
WiFi (802,11a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)
Microphone.
Speakers: Mono Audio.
Headphone jack.
iPad versions of iLife apps: $9.99 each (x 3).

Also I think the user utility associated with Apple's products is exaggerated. It's simplicity that they do well, and again the kind of people who are not aware of the customization they might appreciate, are missing out on and might benefit from are the same people that laud it. That and the fact that user utility feels like it's too often conflated with style. The scroll wheel on the iPod sure was a fancy marketing gimmick but having used a 5G iPod now for over a year, I would gladly get tactile controls back. There's simply no comparison, and really the only thing I can assume is Apple users who claim it's efficient have no frame of reference. The same can be said with OS X, sure it's full of stylish transitions, animations and some good features, but I'd wager especially with how familiar everyone is with Windows, it's no more of an efficient work tool. I see Jobs made a big deal about pointing out that the iPad will have a similar user interface to the iPhone. I think that drives home the point that there's nothing that immensely intuitive about Apple devices. They still must be learnt. People are simply more willing to invest time into learning to how to use an interface of a device that is more popular and they predict will be around for a longer time.

Coming back to the iPad, I still think even the average consumer is going to be pissed off by the lack of some features. It's pretty clear that they didn't just want to make a portable internet device that surpasses the iPhone in usability, they wanted to make something that clearly doesn't eat into the market share of their budget MacBook and MacBook Air. They could have loaded a desktop OS on it, but they purposely didn't. I think many will struggle with the idea that an internet device like this can't do Flash, doesn't have a USB port and can't run their favourite PC/Mac programs.

That may be it's downfall or marketing, and simplicity as you mentioned may win out. If Apple says 'revolutionary' enough, maybe they won't realise this device is bested by something that came out in October 2009.

Steve Jobs announces the iPad

Mondo says...

This thing will meet the computing needs of just about all of my relatives. They are average people with average tech knowledge and ability. This is the market that will benefit from the iPad, and will make Apple lots of money.

At first I forgot that Apple is targeting the 'average' market, and almost threw a fit over the lack of a webcam. Then I remembered that the majority of computer users don't actually use webcams. I don't even use a webcam, I was just hoping for as many bells and whistles as possible, without thinking realistically.

The lack of Flash also made me do a doubletake. But after some thought, I realized that Flash is mostly used for three things on the web: video, games, and advertisement. We can scratch the need for advertisement. There are already tons of free games for the iPad. Video is going to be a problem at first, but as HTML5 gains traction it will become a non-issue. I'm not so sure Flash is such a dealbreaker.

No multitasking is a bit of a bummer, but not as bad as many think. On my iPhone, I can listen to music, browse the web, and receive push notifications when I receive an instant message. In a second or two I can go from reading a web page to typing a message to a friend. When I'm done, I can easily get back to my web page. It's by no means multitasking, but it's not terrible.

One overlooked benefit is the security aspect of the iPad. Right now I can think of one "virus" for the iPhone. It only effects jailbroken devices with default root passwords, and is only proof of concept. As it stands right now, the iPad may be one of the safest browsing devices out there. As the resident tech guy, again and again I have helped clean up family computers which were completely trashed due to malware and viruses. I don't see that being a problem with the iPad anytime soon. This gives me piece of mind, helps me rest easier knowing my family isn't at such risk.

Personally, I don't think I'll be getting one because I already have an iPhone and a nice desktop computer. When I go mobile, I'll be getting a nice laptop. However, I can easily see my parents using an iPad. My dad LOVES his iPod Touch, hardly uses his laptop anymore. This will be perfect for the many many people like my parents.

Rotating Kitchen Art Piece

cybrbeast says...

Interesting, I wouldn't have mind to see a few more rotations. After a few rotations I think most stuff would have fallen out of the side. Would be nice if there was a webcam on this installation. Also a camera inside the kitchen would be awesome.

Japanese Hentai video game "Real Kanojo" benchmark and demo

Shepppard says...

there has to be a line drawn.

I truly can't see why people are still making a fuss about these sorts of things. You need to realize that this wont influence anything that isn't already there.

It's the presence of a strong moral background that stops people from doing things, like accepting violent tendencies from video games and accepting them into their own life styles. The same works for any situation in any video game.

How do we know this objectifies anything? I see the claim that this is a "Hentai" video game, however, I see no proof of having any form of nudity in it, she doesn't have a camel toe, and nothing gets see-through as it gets wet. the only thing I've seen so far is a comment by mxxcon stating the game is a -Dating Simulator- that can be hooked to a webcam and react to how you act with it.

For all we know, the thing gets pissed off if you spend too long looking at her girlie parts, and the only thing we see get poked or prodded is her face, and thats by hands. The reason she's well endowed? Well, if it were me, I wouldn't be as flustered in real life talking to someone flat chested, assed, with a lazy eye and a terrible haircut as I would talking to someone like Meagan Fox.

Sure, that comment is somewhat sexist, but true. I can get past looks for personality and intelligence when it comes to dating, but if I were to approach someone of that caliber I'd probably be tripping over words and be somewhat uncomfortable.

Give me proof, rather then speculation. A term many on the sift are familiar with for their belief on religion. It stands just as true here. Stop saying this is objectifying women, without showing her be dominated by a male, be submissive when she is being fondled (Which this video shows that she isn't) or that she has no opinions and is only there to please her master (And without a translation, we don't know what she talks about during the video)

Until such time as any evidence to those are presented, I'll assume this is just a more adult version of project Milo for natal, and truly lives up to its "Dating Simulator" name, rather then some smut game.

Japanese Hentai video game "Real Kanojo" benchmark and demo

mxxcon says...

A new game titled Real Kanojo (Real Girlfriend) is a dating simulator.

The game has the ability to use face tracking technology via a webcam. So when you make motions like nodding "she" can respond to you. It also supports 3D glasses – stereoscopic, red and blue 3D glasses to give the illusion of depth and realism. Which is great because just like my last girlfriend, the 3D glasses are bound to give me a headache after a while. IT'S SO REAL!

Real Girlfriend aims to be the most technologically advanced virtual girlfriend game to date. A title every developer should be striving for. All of the scenes are motion captured, it's compatible with Windows 7, supports wide screen monitors (in case your into big girls, I guess), and multi-core CPUs.

The creators of the game have sadly decided to release the game exclusively in Japan.

INCREDIBLE video of space shuttle ascent

Doc_M says...

As ABSOLUTELY AMAZING as this is, my first question remains. Why is NASA not videoing at insanely high resolution. We should be seeing this in 1080p at a 10x compression from their original video files... not blurry 640x480 crap. Video technology has come a LOOONNNGGG way since 1970 and we should see that. If (read "when") there is another trip to the moon, I expect to see perfect video... On top of that, EVERY SINGLE VIDEO we see from the ISS should be in absolutely perfect HD with HD quality sound. Why, in 2009, are we still seeing fuzzy video with telephone-quality sound from our astronauts? Better, why are our astronauts apparently communicating via completely low-rez, almost incomprehensible quality CB-style radio? It should look and sound like they are in the next room... heck, our webcams are better quality than what we get from the ISS. As it appears to me, that would seem to be an additional 1 pound of technology in terms of the cams and only maybe 1000x the bandwidth they sent to earth in the 70's, and if they can't send that amount of data down today, than they need to rethink things a bit. psh. psh I say. I simply unimpressed by NASA's PR department. As a scientist I'm profoundly affected by their work, but as a citizen AND a scientist, I'm uni pressed with the way they've presented what they've been doing to the general public.

For goodness sake, SHOW US SOME COOL STUFF!! It's not that hard. Show us video from the moon. Show us video from the probes, show us video from deeps space. Show us ANYTHING! It is not that hard people. Think of us curious folks who just want to see things and know things. No more of these "artistic renderings" of everything you discover. Plug some damn HD video cams on your dang equipment for goodness sake.

Disclaimer: I recognize that I know jack-shit about space technology, and that I don't understand how exactly we get information direct from from outerspace installations and etc... but seriously, come on. 30 years and no improvement?
