9 Heinous Things Players Have Done in GTA5 (Wtf Talk Post)

Grand Theft Auto V - First Gameplay Trailer

Jinx says...

So wait. They make the game on PC, squeeze it on console hardware...and then don't announce a PC release? I thought the idea of developing just for consoles meant you could fine tune the engine for specific hardware, but you say that they make a PC "version" and then scale it backwards. Sounds nutty.

I'd wager a lot of this stuff IS running on the ingame engine, in real time, but that its heavily scripted with very little actually interactivity.

Anyway. The heist focus sounds cool. Also, for me GTA is a driving game at heart. I used to do laps of Vice City in the Sabre Turbo trying to beat my best time. Shooting at people was a minigame inbetween driving. If they can flesh out the minigame thats cool, just not at the expense of driving.

At this point it's pretty likely it's a development build running on PC, too early to tell if it's really been optimised well for current gen consoles.

Anyway, I'm glad they're focussing explicitly on mechanics. I've always found GTA games to be full of superflous 'gameplay' I wouldn't ever spend time on. Perhaps I'm part of the cynical bunch that doesn't buy the immersion angle.

If more mini-games this time around are actual fun diversions then great. If the gun mechanics are tightened up, maybe it'll play as a better 3rd person shooter in it's own right.

Otherwise, I worry they're just bloating out the feature pool like they've done in each successive sequel.

Grand Theft Auto V - First Gameplay Trailer

SDGundamX says...

Yeah, I'm with you on that although I found SA to be too "heavy" at times too. The last GTA I played all the way to the end was Vice City. I thought it struck the perfect balance between satirical/comical and "serious" story.

Asmo said:

They mentioned satirical, so it might be that they are going back to the more kitsch end of the scale like SA. 4 was fucking annoying.

Grand Theft Auto V - Trailer #2

That's because one day an exec somewhere woke up and realized that all those options cost more money, execs usually suck.

Any news on the gameplay view?
You know how GTA3, Vice City, S.A. were all centered behind the player but in IV it was kinda "over the shoulder". Ruined the game for me. IS V going to be the same?
Funny how old games gave you a ton of options like that but modern ones are more restrictive for some reason.

Japanese Hentai video game "Real Kanojo" benchmark and demo

GeeSussFreeK says...

If this is objectification, then I don't even what to know what other games like GTA4 are in your mind. It isn't real, they are pixels. There are no real people like this simulated thing, just as Vice city isn't a real place and you didn't really kill those school children. Game over man, game over.

Simulations can not, by their very nature, be objectified because they are themselves actual objects, not complex figures of which we are denying their autonomy (because they don't have any!), or denying their subjectivity (as they don't have a subjective mind!). While we may comment on the type of person that plays this game, the game itself is not objectification, there are simply no real figures to objectify.

In short Fantasizing != Objectifying. If so, then people who play GTA4 are fucking murdering lunatics and people who play Black and White are blasphemous. You tread a slippy slope because you find the content objectionable to your tastes, but your inability to separate out fantastic from reality smacks of Jack Thompson.

GameTrailers: 2008 Game of the Year

Deano says...

For me, 2008 wasn't that great a gaming year. GTAIV annoyed me eventually. Like Vice City it has many joyous moments then I came across a bit that really put me off. GTAIV didn't feel focused enough particularly with these silly tasks to maintain relationships. No more bowling for me!

The best game I played was Mass Effect from 2007. Prince of Persia and Uncharted were both nice but since recently acquiring a PS3 I don't see anything else that interests me.

I'm beginning to think that 2010 might be the next great gaming year. Certainly Mass Effect 2 will be out by then and maybe KillZone 2

Grand Theft Auto vehicle retrospective

ReverendTed says...

I was thinking the same thing, but after a bit of research I believe we're remembering the "Beast GTS", which was essentially a Dodge Viper...on which GTA3 and GTA4 Banshees were based. (In Vice City, the Banshee was modeled after a Chevrolet Corvette.) So it was there in GTA 1, just called something different.

Counter-Strike - You Got Owned By A Five Year Old

12418 says...

I did respond civilly rottenseed, I think if you re read Spoco2's posts and my answers to them you'll see I kept my cool for as long as possible. I don't think MarineGunrock ever attacked me, and I certainly didn't attack him.

It seems now that I'm here to defend myself that people have less to say about it. The video was made in fun, by my 17 year old and myself as we were astounded by how well he was playing against guys my oldest usually plays against. It was one of those "Let me try! Let me try!" we got out of his way and let him.

People see this, and the other vid I made when he was younger and think This is all he does, Which isn't so. He occasionally plays these games, but when he does, he's good at them. *That's* the joke of the vids we're trying to convey. Our shock at how good he is at mastering the key commands. Crouch, jump, strafe, and weapon switches, he learned it all by watching, Before he could even read. And could pull it off with his tiny hands and short fingers.

I dunno. the images of ragdolls being blown across the sky dont seem gory to me. There are flashes of simulated blood, but on my system, it's hard to tell. It's not like other games where if you shoot someone they're covered in blood, and lose and arm or leg. Like FEAR or something. Those games are harmful because of the atmosphere, the sounds and music are huge contributing factors that create an air of fear and horror.

For the record, we dont have any vice city games in my house. Attacking police, robbing people, and picking up hookers isn't something I'll let my kids partake in, even if it is just a game.

The Most Gratuitous Headshots Video Ever

Zero Punctuation: Grand Theft Auto IV

jubuttib says...

The numbering is logical and consistent, since it follows the same scheme that Unreal Tournament uses: The engine is upgraded, the number grows. GTA and London used the exact same one, GTA II was supposedly a new one (they claimed that in the past, though I'm not that sure), GTA III had a new 3d one, Vice City and San Andreas just tweaked it a little, and now GTA IV has a completely new one again.

Other than that, the review was great, as they always are. I've loved the GTA series for as long as it has existed, and never once have had any doubts about a new one. Rockstar hasn't disappointed me once yet, they have always taken the series forwards. No two games have felt the same, and even though I loved VC more than SA, after playing through SA, VC just feels so empty and limited. The story is better, but everything else...

Though hopefully they have fixed the camera from SA, that drove me fucking insane. Never could see where you were turning...

I think for now I'll play all of them again just for the heck of it. A lot of time to kill before this comes to the PC.

How To Have An Opinion About GTA IV

ShakaUVM says...

Yeah, the cell phone really irks me. I'm heading back to save, and the cell phone rings without fail. So I can either ignore my girlfriend, or accept it, and then not be able to save (since saving advances the clock by 6 hours, which means you miss your date). Most of the time when driving, I accept it automatically, since I use the classic controls. I mean, seriously, the NPCs in this game nag you more than girlfriends do in real life. Is that fun?

What bugs me more is that the handling of cars is much, much worse in GTA IV. I could drive around Vice City like a pro, but in this game, it feels like you do when you first start out in those older games. Braking, turning carefully, etc. It doesn't help that the camera tends to blind you by swinging to far low behind the car, and dark areas are really really dark.
