The New Wave of YouTube "Skeptics"

00Scud00 says...

She didn't call, she sent letters to his employer, the local police and the media. In that letter she referred to him as a Nazi so many times it could be required reading for anyone studying Godwin's Law.

Keller decided to act like a petty vindictive asshole simply because someone had to gall to disagree with her on the internet. The fact that someone else managed to turn her life upside down does not change what she did or somehow make it more excusable.

That being said, I did find the video where thunderf00t doxxed Keller and I also thought he acted like a petty vindictive asshole. And I'm fine with calling them both out on it, rather than trying to draw attention away from one person's wrongdoings by pointing to someone who they believe to be worse.

Sure, the MRA trolls will love some of what thunderf00t has to say about Sarkeesian and other feminists. Liking or agreeing with something someone says however does not mean you buy into their ideology in it's entirety. Donald Trump could tell me the sky is blue, and I might agree, but agreeing to that does not also mean I think we should build a big wall to keep out Mexicans.

As far as what some of his "fans" and or Baphomet did I suspect you'll ignore their individual or group responsibilities in favor of simply blaming it on thunderf00t simply because you want to. Buttered my bread? Based on what I've read so far I can imagine you would know something about bias.

Massive Police Chase Against Stunt Motorcycles

Dumdeedum says...

On the upside, their vanity in releasing the video should make identification and prosecutions easier.

I am being sued for using the Google Play Store.

I am really pleased he's going out, gathering information and reporting on all the related parties who are committing these crimes. I feel extremely bad for him that he probably had no choice but to turn his own life upside down in order to do that though, because undoubtedly he'd rather being working on his flight sim or other more constructive projects.

X-Plane is really good.

The Whoosh Bottle

moonsammy says...

That's quite awesome. Really like the variety of shapes the burning gas takes, particularly the bumpy upside-down pie platter thing about 1/2 way through the video (shows as a thumbnail for me as well).

Obama, Merkel, Hollande, Renzi and Cameron are going to be in town on Monday. I suppose parts of the city will be locked down tighter than a duck's ass...

As if that wasn't enough, public transit workers are on strike next week, so it'll be quite a mess. On the upside, the resulting traffic jam ought to make it safer for cyclists like myself...

I can only speak for myself I guess, but certainly when I would order a chicken burger, I would only think about juicy soft chicken breast with a crunchy outer bread layer and the mayonnaise. There's no way I would order the burger and think about where the chicken came from, what happened to it, how it felt while hanging upside down, and the sad existence it lived prior to that.

Obviously everyone knows that meat comes from a farm. But again speaking for myself, once you know the reality of it, it's a different story.

If you have any hints on how to make headway without even unwilling being insulting while trying to make my points, I'm all ears

Oh no, I'm not feeling guilt or shame, but thanks for the concern. ;-)

I'm saying that inflicting guilt and shame are the obvious intents of your posts, even if not intentionally. You are trying to 'educate' people so they know to feel guilty or ashamed of how they live/eat, in the hope that that guilt/shame will get them to stop eating meat.
I think (I hope) that people who've never thought about the fact that meat is an animal are few and far between, and that most people make an informed choice. I've gone farther in that sense than most since my family raised many types of meat, humanely, and even butchered our own when I was young, but I give people the benefit of a doubt that they aren't just eating meat and not connecting it with an animal. I'm sure a few are, but I think not many.

I find it insulting to imply that people haven't thought it through...but I know I'm a weirdo so perhaps I'm the only one insulted and I should just shut up. ;-)

The Death Of National Geographic

TheFreak says...

Well, the upside being...National Geographic was such an excellent magazine that you really couldn't throw an issue away. You stuck it away in your ever growing library of National Geographic magazines. Then years later you have stacks and stacks of the magazine that you can't get rid of.

Now that problem is fixed.

Why Are Aeroplane Wings Angled Backwards?

Chairman_woo says...

God dammit, pressure is not how wings produce lift! (in his defence it's an extremely common mis-explanation)

If it was then they wouldn't ever work upside down (which they clearly can do when designed for it). Nor does the top and bottom airflow always meet again on the other side evenly, or in fact is the bottom stream always faster than the top.

Bernoulli's principle augments lift in efficient designs, but it's newtons 3rd law which actually makes them work.

You can even see the wash vortex falling down off the wings flying through smoke. It's the equal and opposite reaction from this deflection that causes the majority of lift and drag from a wing .

Parking space math puzzle

dregan says...

It's a bit of a false advertisement that the fonts upside down are not symmetrical in relation to when they are right side up. The small loops on the 8 are at the top before and after they flip it. This is a clear, yet subliminal "tell" to try to trick the viewer. If they really wanted to do this they would not have swapped the fonts when rotating.

Elk City Idaho Landslide

newtboy says...

Cameraman seriously sucks.
I hate when people film a long video of the slow buildup to something exciting, but when the excitement happens they forget they're filming and instead of whatever they were filming we just get upside down footage of the ground, feet, and a tire.

Father Rescues Son from Tree Well

newtboy says...

Lucky kid.
When I was a kid, I fell into one of those head first, and was completely upside down with my skis still on holding me from sinking deeper. I was the last person off the slope that day, so no one saw or helped me. It took me an hour to dig myself out, and I almost died. I totally get the screams of terror, it's pretty scary to be buried alive.

Baby elephant causes havoc at home

newtboy says...

Please explain.
The priority is clearly to save injured and/or abandoned animals and make them happy and healthy. They seem to be doing a GREAT job of that, at the expense of a cheap couch. What's the 'upside down priority' or 'lack of foresight' you speak of?
Are you suggesting the cheap outdoor couch is more important than the baby elephant's happiness and well being? THAT sounds like an upside down priority to me.

Baby elephant causes havoc at home

supreme skills - tops

newtboy says...

I think you still misunderstand. I don't mean it would hang from above, it would balance on it's contact point. In that way, it would 'hang', but the point of contact would be pointing down in contact with the top of the 2cm cylinder and the bulk of the mass in a ring hanging below that point. To exaggerate for clarity, think of a soda can with the top cut off, turned upside down, and balanced on a pin touching the exact center of the inner can 'bottom'...then spin it.
My idea is a top EXACTLY as they made it, except the weighted ring is much lower, so the CG is below the point. Then, when set on the pedestal, it would be stable when stationary (when set on a counter, the point would not touch). I can't see why that would change when spun as long as the CG stays below the point and balanced/centered.
It would balance when stationary, no question. My only question is what might happen when you spin it, would the rotation make the CG 'want' to be above the contact point for some reason, or would nothing happen. I don't have a lathe to make one myself to try, so I thought someone well versed in rotational physics might know.

rbar said:

@newtboy I think you are right if the spinning top would hang, ie its tip would be inverted (pointing upward, stuck to the plateau in some manner). Any movement away from center for the CG would be pulled back by gravity. No spinning required. However that is not a spinning top but a pendulum. As long as the tip is on top of the ground (pointing down) and not hanging the spinning top will be unstable and the only way to balance the top is to spin it no matter where the CG is.
