Hey, Mint! I just posted a vid about yet another disastrous typhoon in Taiwan, and I noticed your vid from last year about Jangmi. I had no idea you were there for that storm. I was living in Taipei at the time (I even landed into Jangmi on a flight back from Okinawa). Do you live in the area? Did you get to check out Taroko after the winds calmed? In what capacity were you covering the storm? I just came back to the US after a year in Taipei, and this connection to my "old" life is tickling me.

So I use reason and common sense. If that makes a person a internet expert then im a freakin god. The situation you posed still comes down to the same simple fact. They knew a hurricane was coming, they stayed.

And people regularly weather hurricanes. Whether it's a hurricane or typhoon, there are populations who know how to deal with it, except this time was different.

If anything it was an engineering disaster because floodwalls and levees broke below design specifications.

Eurofighter Typhoon almost crashes

kulpims says...

this was filmed during Eurofighter's practice display at 2005 RIAT (Royal International Air Tattoo), Fairford airfield. this is what I managed to find about the incident - from an aviation photographer, who was present at the practice: "during the Eurofighter Typhoon practice display the pilot (a Sqn Leader) made a serious misjudgement which caused the tower to call an immediate halt to his display (STOP STOP STOP heard on radio) and land. As he was only 1.5 minutes into his 10+ minute display he flew to high altitude with afterburners on to burn off the fuel before landing. Apparently later that evening he re-did his practice but removing one of the sequences and got approval for displaying on the Saturday/Sunday." (read more)
here's the same event filmed from the other side of the runway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwEAr5MtCbA

56 Leonard Street's video - Incredibly Interesting Building

spawnflagger says...

This is beautiful but scary. A little too much form, and not enough function. 60 stories @ 14' makes this over 800'. I highly doubt this design tested well in a wind tunnel... good thing NYC doesn't get typhoons or tornadoes.

Even Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater (pivotal example of cantilever design) is only 2 floors tall and even it had to have a steel support beam added years later otherwise the porch would have fallen into the creek... I'm sure building materials are better these days, but contractors are always cutting corners...

The jenga description is perfect though, just a question of when it'll collapse. I give it 40-50 years. (or much sooner should a suicide bomber strapped with C4 be taking a tour of one of the apartments on the lower floors...) But then again the security better be pretty damn tight if your apt is between $3.5 million and $33 million...

google maps location of the building here . Be sure to check street view.

Also, they'll probably enact a tenant agreement saying that residents can only buy Apple computers

lots of information and floorplans here - http://www.56leonardtribeca.com
site photo from october here , somehow I doubt they'll finish by 2010...

Funny how one of the most destructive eras of our recent history is also one of the most romantic.

That has actually been something that I've struggled with for quite some time. Growing up I romanticized that era like most others. I learned plane names and technical aspects, pilots names, airbases, dates, and statistics and all the while never really grasped what it was that I was really glorifying. That's not to say that finding an interest in the machines of war makes you a lover of war but there certainly is a grey area there. It's real easy, too easy in fact in this day and age to find some old footage, slap on some Glen Miller or Benny Goodman and then sit back and feel good about it all. Personally I try to learn more about the actual man inside the machine these days. What was their story and where are they now kinda thing. I still find a limitless interest and passion for the machine but it helps me keep things in perspective... for what it's worth.

Fake niggaz get blitzed
and mic bites I swing swords and cut clowns
Shit is too swift to bite you record and write it down
I flow like the blood on a murder scene, like a syringe
on some loud howl shit, to insert a fiend
But it was yo ock, the shop stolen heart
Catch a swollen heart from not rollin smart
I put mad pressure, on phony wack rhymes that get hurt
Shit's played, like zodiac signs on sweatshirt
That's minimum, and feminine like sandals
My minimum table stacks a verse on a gamble
Energy is felt once the cards are dealt
With the impact of roundhouse kicks from black belts
that attack, the mic-fones like cyclones or typhoon
I represent from midnight to high noon
I don't waste ink, nigga I think
I drop megaton BOMBS more faster than you blink
Cause rhyme thoughts travel at a tremendous speed
Clouds of smoke, of natural blends of weed
Only under one circumstance is if I'm blunted
Turn that shit up, my clan in da front want it

I'm on a Mission, that niggaz say is Impossible
But when I swing my swords they all choppable
I be the body dropper, the heartbeat stopper
Child educator, plus head amputator
Cause niggaz styles are old like Mark 5 sneakers
Lyrics are weak, like clock radio speakers
Don't even stop in my station and attack
while your plan failed, hit the rail, like Amtrak
What the fuck for? Down by law, I make law
I be justice, I sentence that ass two to four
round the clock, that state pen time check it
With the pens I be stickin but you can't stick to crime
Came through with the Wu, slid off on the DL
I'm low-key like seashells, I rock these bells
Now come aboard, it's Medina bound
Into the chamber, and it's a whole different sound
It's a wide entrance, small exit like a funnel
So deep it's picked up on radios in tunnels
Niggaz are fascinated how the shit begin
Get vaccinated, my logo is branded in your skin

Bill Maher -- Terrorism Versus Liberty -- Sept. 19, 2008

rougy says...

I think she said we have more hurricaines due to "warming ocean temperatures" not "global warming."

And there seems to be some support for that claim:

...2005 was the most active hurricane season on record, and Atlantic water temperatures were the warmest, about 1.4 degrees above normal. That hurricane season set a new high with 28 storms and 13 hurricanes. Seven of the hurricanes were major storms.

In 1971, when the water temperatures were the coolest, there were 13 storms and six hurricanes, including one major one.

The index of overall hurricane activity was more than twice as high in 2005 as it was in 1971.

The scientists who have linked global warming to stronger storms said the study makes sense, and is, if anything, just repeating and refining what they have already said.

USAToday.com

Hurricanes, typhoons, and cyclones have always bedeviled coasts, but global warming may be making matters worse. Sea level is rising and will continue to rise as oceans warm and glaciers melt. Rising sea level means higher storm surges, even from relatively minor storms, which increases coastal flooding and subsequent storm damage along coasts. In addition, the associated heavy rains can extend hundreds of miles inland, further increasing the risk of flooding.

Why Do ALL Europeans Hate America?

11616 says...

After taking the time to read the comments, I've joined the sift community now just to post here.

Ignorance and narrowmindedness exsist everywhere. I'm absolutely certain there are anti-china mentalities in china, Anti-Egyptians in Egypt, heck, I'll bet there are Anti-Canadians here in Canada. So why is it we're only hearing about the Americans?
Because they have the most control over our media here.

Same reason that, sure the typhoon in Sri Lanka was covered for a while, but 9/11 is a few memorials away from becoming a national holiday. (opinion!)
Disasters happen everywhere. Bombings in Israel are covered as a side story in our news.
I find that unfair.
I understand that news covers "local" before "international" but the US is international to Canada... right?
If this was a news post on.. say... how much Europe hates Aussies... would it get this much discussion?
I doubt it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, this report is almost nothing but a cry for attention. Lo and Behold, they've got it.
