Evolution May Be True, But I Don't Believe In It

8756 says...

I'm currently re-watching the entire Friends seasons, and when I've watched this episode (season 2, The one with Heckell's death - or something like that), I've immediatly though about the "creationism" buzz you got in the US (not much here, in France).

I think that Phoebe, here, is making fun about Ross more than questioning the "truthiness" of the Evolution. She's weird, that's a fact, but not that idiot nor ignorant (that's what I feel about this character). At that time, in the 90's, nobody cares about creationism. In fact, she never mentions creationism ! I think that this kind of scene should be hard to be set up in a contemporary sitcom.

BTW, one of my favourite moment here is when she's saying :
"Ok, don't get me started on gravity ! It's not that I don't believe in gravity, but those days, i've got the feeling that i'm not so pulled down than i am pushed."

Conservapedia on The Hour

12032 says...

I would like to detract my handful of hits from the number he claims are "flocking" to conservapedia for information. I merely stopped to see a bloody carwreck of human logic and stupidity. And I may have backed up to look a few more times. I'm such a lookie-loo...

By the way, someone already came up with a word to describe conservapedia: Truthiness. according to Wikiality (a clearly non-baised source for the definitions of made-up words...)- it is "the reality that is intuitively known without regard to liberal ideals such as reason and logic." Think about it. The site and its purpose was mocked before it was even created.

Bridging the Great Divide (Politics Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

Actually, MGS4 is the threadkiller.

I am biting off a lot, but I've been in a very adversarial mode about this election for a while now, and it's just not healthy.

I'd love to set the adversarial nature aside, but the past 8 years has shown me that's just going to lead to the end (or at least massive diminishment) of everything I believe in.

Bohm dialogue was kind've secondary to me -- interesting in its own right to be sure, but it doesn't seem like it could help the overall goal. I do see elements of it in how Obama has handled campaign attacks, but it's not really suited for the situation we have now.

It's definitely a good way to remain friends with people who're on the other side of the divide, especially when it comes to focusing on the shared experience of being human.

I was more focused on that wonderful quote that highlights the key issue I see. Democrats may win the presidency, a filibuster-proof majority of the senate, and rebalance the supreme court to our favor, but if the Republican/conservative people insist on staying in their alternate reality, it's just going to make the division worse.

Obama seems to have a way of piercing that bubble, but there's still a media empire out there dedicated to creating and sustaining the alternate reality.

I think media reform is probably one of the most important things to focus on if we do wrest control away from the neocons.

Personally, I'd love to see people who speak to the press charged with perjury for lying to the press. Let them say "no comment" if they want, but no more of this standing in front of cameras and flatly denying the facts at hand. If they want to do that, they can release a YouTube on their website.

I also think there's need for independent watchdog groups that have official standing as media regulators would be a good idea. Something like mediamatters.org, only with some restrictions on the political affiliations of who works there.

In short, truthiness needs to die for us to truly get back on track.

Chris Matthews DESTROYS Right Wing Talking Head

NetRunner says...

This clip encourages me.

Matthews shows awareness of history, insists on calling someone out when it's misrepresented, and in the end sets the record straight with the facts.

If the media starts doing this all the time, the Republican party is finished.

God help us, we may be seeing the beginning of the end of the era of truthiness.

WHY ARE WE STILL IN IRAQ?!!! Dennis Kucinich

EDD says...

I hope Obama's latest remarks about him 'thinking about' Clinton as his VP was just politically-correct-campaign-bull.

I do hope Kucinich gets the spot, though; like kulpims said, he's pretty much the Ron Paul of Dems.

Hell, think about it, it would be a dream come true - 4 years of truth instead of truthiness, prosperity instead of poverty and liberty instead of (in)security. That's right, BillO, go ahead and downvote this, it's one of those liberal-biased truths.

And you'd actually also get rather hot first and second ladies, if I may say so. Bit fairer images than those of Mrs.Bush (although you gotta admit-I picked a picture in which she's doing a really good job).
